Delhi Government has warned of punitive action against auto-rickshaw owners, who have called for a strike from tomorrow to protest against its decision of making installation of GPS systems mandatory,if they fail to comply with the directive.
Asking the auto unions to follow the government directive,Transport Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely today said installation of GPS systems in autorickshaws is a must for getting fitness certificate and no auto-rickshaw would be allowed to ply without it.
The commuters should not face any inconvenience. At the same time the auto-rickshaw owners will have to comply with the government directive as no fitness certificate will be issued without the GPS. If they fail to do so,then action will follow, he said.
Various auto unions have called for indefinite strike from tomorrow to protest against the government’s decision to make the installation of GPS mandatory.
The unions which have announced to go on strike include Bharatiya Tipaya Chalak Sangh and Nyay Path Auto Drivers Welfare Association.
In an effort to rein in the auto drivers following complaints of overcharging, the city government had issued an order earlier this year asking all autorickshaw owners to install GPS in their vehicles so as to ensure that they run on metres and do not overcharge.
The auto unions said they are not opposed to installation of GPS but the cost of the equipment must be borne by the government. A GPS system costs in the range of Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000
