Manual toll collection at entry points to the city will be a thing of the past with Airoli and Dahisar getting automatic toll plazas by March-end. Mumbai Entry Point Limited (MEPL),the company that collects toll from vehicles passing through the various entry points into the city,is planning to implement the automatic toll collection system.
According to Jayant Mhaiskar, managing director,Mumbai Entry Points Limited (MEPL),it would first increase the lanes that collect toll at Airoli and Dahisar and then implement the automatic collection system by March-end.
The MEPL would be using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology in the system. There are two types in the RFID system wherein the windscreen would have specific tags. As the vehicle with these tags would pass through these lanes, the frequency will detect the validity of the card and the vehicle need not have to stop. If there is any problem, then the vehicles movement would be obstructed automatically, said Mhaiskar.
The system would be later extended to the toll plazas at Mulund (both the LBS Marg check naka and the Anand Nagar toll plaza on the Eastern Express Highway) and Vashi. The company will also increase the number of toll plazas at Vashi by adding more lanes.
