Punjab Additional Director General of Police (ADGP-Rules) Rajinder Singhs gunman reportedly committed suicide on Sunday by shooting himself. He was in the security tent outside the ADGPs private farmhouse on the bed of Patiala Ki Rao seasonal rivulet passing through Mohali.
While the police attribute the death of Constable Harwinder Singh to accident, sources said the deceased used to be upset and did not interact much with his colleagues. Harwinder was posted in the ADGP contingent only four days ago.
Around 11.40 am,Harwinder a constable from Commando Battalion V of Punjab Police told his colleagues that he was going inside the tent to prepare lunch, said Sub-Inspector Gurjeet Singh. After a while, his colleagues heard a gun shot. They rushed inside and found Harwinder bleeding profusely from the head. A weapon was lying nearby, he added. On being rushed to the Civil Hospital,Harwinder was declared dead on arrival.
According to preliminary investigation, the SLR,from which the shot was fired, was allotted to Chanan Singh another gunman of the ADGP. Chanan, who has been on leave for the last few days, had left his weapon in the tent. However, the cartridge used was from the magazine allotted to Harwinder.
According to Gurjeet Singh,it seems Harwinder had accidentally shot himself when he was cleaning the SLR. The ADGP was present at the farmhouse when the incident took place.
The body will be taken for postmortem on Monday and inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC have been initiated.
We have informed the deceaseds family at Bhattal Bhai Ke village in Tarn Taran, said Gurjeet Singh.
