Baghpat Lok Sabha Constituency is a significant political region in Uttar Pradesh. Baghpat is one of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh and voting will take place in the second phase on April 26.
It lies in the North India region. The constituency comprises five Vidhan Sabha (Assembly) segments: Siwalkhas, Chhaprauli, Baraut, Baghpat and Modi Nagar.
The incumbent Member of Parliament is Dr. Satya Pal Singh, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In the 2019 general elections, Dr. Satya Pal Singh secured victory with 525,789 votes, defeating Jayant Chaudhary of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) by a margin of 23,502 votes. The voter turnout was 64.68%.
Raj Kumar Sagwan, RLD
This marks the 68-year-old’s debut in electoral politics and he thanked the party leadership for its decision to select him as a Lok Sabha candidate. “I would like to thank the party leadership for placing their trust in me,” Sagwan told mediapersons. He has been associated with the RLD for nearly four decades and worked at various levels.
Hailing from Meerut, Sagwan, after completing his PhD, served as a professor at a university in Meerut, said RLD’s Baghpat district president, Rampal Dhama.
Belonging to the Jat community, he is now RLD national secretary within the party. Sagwan, who is unmarried, is known for his connect with grassroots politics and was involved in student and farmer politics. He was associated with several agitations. He claims to have joined politics after being “inspired by Chaudhary Charan Singh”.
Amarpal Sharma, SP
Amarpal Sharma had contested the assembly elections on BSP ticket from Sahibabad seat of Ghaziabad and had won. After Meerut seat, Samajwadi Party also changed its candidate in Baghpat. SP had earlier played the Jat card on this seat but with just one day left for the nominations to end, it has played the Brahmin card by announcing the name of Amarpal Sharma.
After changing the ticket of Advocate Bhanu Pratap from Meerut-Hapur Lok Sabha, SP has changed the candidate in Baghpat a day before the end of nominations. Amarpal Sharma has been made the candidate here. SP, who is contesting in alliance with Congress, has given symbol to Amarpal Sharma.

Praveen Bansal 43 years old and an advocate at the Delhi High Court.He holds a post-graduate degree (M.A. in Political Science) from CCS University, Meerut (2012). He also completed his LLB from CCS University in 2009.
