Today's Top News Headlines and Latest News at 8:30 pm on 14th November 2022

You are listening to the Expresso News Update. Here is the latest news from The Indian Express.
Let us begin with the top national news: With the global economy looking more uncertain amid the war, expectations have turned modest in New Delhi. Top officials are wary of moderating expectations right now since the political establishment is rooting for a 7 per cent plus growth rate and retail inflation of under 6 per cent within the 2-6 per cent range as per the monetary policy framework agreement between the Union Ministry of Finance and the RBI. Ending the financial year 2022-23 with the economy growing at 6.5 per cent, retail inflation at 6.5 per cent, repo rate at 6.5 per cent, and a fiscal deficit as a percentage of GDP at 6.5 per cent will be a reasonable expectation, according to top government sources.
"In other news: Nalini Sriharan, one among the six convicts in the 1991 Rajiv Gandhi assassination case released on Saturday evening from Tamil Nadu prisons, said one of the most turbulent days she encountered in the three decades of incarceration was the visit of Priyanka Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi’s daughter, at the Vellore prison.

Talking to the media after being released, Nalini said her priority is to meet her daughter, who lives in the UK, along with her husband and co-convict Murugan. When asked about the chances of meeting the Gandhi family and other victims' families of the blast that killed Rajiv Gandhi in May 1991, she said she has no words. Nalini said she is hesitant to meet the family of Rajiv Gandhi.

"Meanwhile, a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi heads for the G-20 summit in Bali, where India will be handed the group’s presidency for the year ahead, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra underlined Sunday the key challenges that confront world leaders, including the “ongoing conflict” in Ukraine and “its knock-on effects, such as food security challenges, energy crisis and inflation”.

The G-20 leaders “will discuss these challenges and underscore the importance of closer multilateral cooperation to help overcome” them, Kwatra said.

In the context of India’s G-20 presidency, he said the “evolving priorities” will include “green development”, “lifestyle for the environment”, “digital transformation”, “inclusive and resilient growth”, and “women-led development”."
"In some political news: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced that its Gujarat chief ministerial candidate Isudan Gadhvi would contest the coming Assembly elections from the constituency of Khambhaliya in Devbhumi Dwarka district.

The Ahir community is the most-dominant electoral group in the area and only Ahir candidates have been elected from the seat since 1972. Ahirs are categorised under Other Backward Classes (OBC), just like the Gadhvi community.

Isudan Gadhvi will be up against senior Congress leader, incumbent MLA Vikram Madam, and BJP veteran Mulu Bera. The rivalry between Madam and Bera dates back almost three decades and the two are set for a showdown after 20 years."
"Meanwhile, amid sharp Opposition criticism over an allegedly deteriorating law and order situation, Punjab’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government Sunday ordered a complete ban on the public display of weapons and songs glorifying violence.

In a communication to the Director General of Police, Commissioners of Police, District Magistrates and Senior Superintendents of Police, the Punjab Home Department also directed a review of all firearm licences issued in the state so far within three months. According to the order, “public display and exhibition of weapons including on social media” as well as songs glorifying weapons or violence are to be banned. It asked officers to “immediately cancel the arms licence” if it was found to be issued to any miscreant during the review.

"Let us look at the top international news: The person responsible for the bomb attack at Istiklal Avenue, a major local pedestrian pathway as well as a tourist attraction in Istanbul, has been arrested by the police, according to Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu.

Citing Minister Soylu, Anadolu Agency shared the news of the arrest through their Twitter account today. The bomb explosion yesterday left six people dead – four at the scene and two at a hospital, according to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Speaking before his departure to the G-20 summit in Bali, Erdogan called the explosion something that “smells like terrorism”, and said that its perpetrators would be punished.

"
"In other news: The international nuclear watchdog IAEA has said it did not see the recent misfire of a BrahMos missile as any cause of “specific concern” and that the incident did not in any way raise questions on the safety of nuclear weapons or material in India.

Rafael Mariano Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, told The Indian Express in an interview at the COP27 climate change meet that the incident was not viewed as a risk and there had been no consultation with the Indian government on this issue. On March 9, a BrahMos cruise missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads was accidentally fired and landed well within Pakistani territory.
