"Let's begin this bulletin with some news on an under-investigation drug whose use has resulted in reduced cognitive decline in patients with early Alzheimer’s, promising to become one of the first neuroprotective therapies for the disease. The companies, Eisai and Biogen, recently announced the results of a phase III trial conducted with 1,795 participants, who already had plaques of the protein called amyloid in their brains.

The yet-to-be peer-reviewed report showed that there was a 27 per cent less decline in the cognitive function of people who took the medicine Lecanemab as compared to those who did not after 18 months. The cognitive decline of the study participants was measured on the DR-SB: Clinical Dementia Rating-Sum of Boxes scale "
A Keto diet is a high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. Carbohydrates are not more than 50 gm. When you’re on the Keto diet, you’re eating too few carbs to support your body’s energy needs. As a result, your body turns to burn your stores of body fat to fuel your energy. When your body burns body fat for fuel, it produces ketones, substances made in your liver. Your body enters a metabolic state called “ketosis.” If you follow the Keto diet strictly, your body will reach ketosis in about four days. This helps to reduce weight. The ratio is usually 60 per cent fat, 35 per cent protein, and five per cent carbs.
"However, Ketogenic diets are risky for gallstones and liver disease patients since they can raise LDL cholesterol levels and may increase overall chronic disease risk owing to high-fat content. Individuals may feel nausea, vomiting, constipation, acidity and bloating, all of which cause discomfort.

Kidney stone formation can be found in some individuals as a Keto diet is high in fat, salt and animal protein. Loading up on meats, especially processed meats, may increase your risk of kidney stones and gout, a severe form of arthritis. High consumption of animal proteins raises urine acidity besides calcium and uric acid levels. This combination increases the chance of kidney stones, whereas excessive uric acid increases the risk of gout."
"Sleep is an integral part of our lives. However, inadequate sleep is becoming a serious health concern in modern times, resulting in stress, fatigue, loss of concentration, and even severe complications such as diabetes and hypertension, among others.

Dr Rajesh T R, Consultant Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon, Kauvery Hospital, Electronic City said, “In India, there is an alarming increase in heart diseases in the young. The disease is much more severe and complications are more in the younger generation, compared to older people. Added to the disease burden is the loss of productive hours and livelihood. This disturbing trend is mainly because of a deteriorating lifestyle, and sleep deprivation is a major part of it,” "
"Among the many misconceptions surrounding contraception options is one that states that women who take birth control pills to delay their pregnancy tend to gain weight. But, is there any truth to it?

Dr Asha Hiremath, consultant – obstetrician, gynaecologist and laparoscopic surgeon, Motherhood Hospitals, Indiranagar, Bangalore said, “While it is unusual, some women do tend to put on a bit of weight, which is seen as a temporary side effect of the pill. The weight restores to normalcy once your body gets adjusted to the contraceptive pills. After beginning hormonal contraceptives, your body can feel bloated, but it is simply temporary fluid retention in your body and not the accumulation of extra fat,”"
"Meanwhile, in some Covid news,

Scientists in the US have developed a new drug that can turn SARS-CoV-2 against itself, and prevent the deadly virus from infecting humans.

The researchers from The Scripps Research Institute believe that the drug, called NMT5, is likely to be effective against the emerging variants of SARS-CoV-2.

The drug, described in the journal Nature Chemical Biology, coats SARS-CoV-2 with chemicals that can temporarily alter the human ACE2 receptor — the molecule the virus normally latches onto to infect cells.
When the virus is near, its path into human cells via the ACE2 receptor is blocked. In the absence of the virus, however, ACE2 can function, as usual, the researchers said."
"In other news,

India’s Supreme Court ruled in a significant judgment stating that it is unconstitutional to distinguish between married and unmarried women for allowing termination of pregnancy on certain exceptional grounds when the foetus is between 20-24 weeks.

Dr Thejaswini J, consultant – obstetrician and gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospitals, Electronic City, Bangalore, says, “Some women experience strong emotions and mood swings after an abortion, mainly due to the hormonal shifts. Choosing to undergo an abortion can be an emotionally-challenging experience. Women may feel extreme relief and sadness at the same time. They can also experience anxiety, grief, a sense of loss, and sleep disorders. This is natural, but if the negative feelings prolong, they should not be ignored, and help should be sought,”"
"Lastly,

While it’s legal, many women struggle to understand what the abortion procedure is all about, and what are the different types they can opt for.

Dr Gunjan Gupta Govil, Gynaecological and IVF Expert, Founder and Chairman, Gunjan IVF World Group said. She added that there are majorly two types of abortion practises applied in India, medical abortion, using abortion pills, and surgical abortion, an in-clinic procedure.

Dr Manisha Singh, Senior Consultant – Gynaecologist and Reproductive Medicine, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, said: “In medical termination, tablets are used to start the expulsion of the pregnancy. Sometimes with the medical method, it may not result in complete abortion. If abortion is not done completely, then we have to go for the surgical method,”"
