Thailand-Cambodia ceasefire talks: Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an unconditional ceasefire, effective midnight, following a meeting between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai in Putrajaya, Malaysia. US President Donald Trump claimed personal credit for brokering a ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand, calling it a major diplomatic achievement and declaring, “I am proud to be the President of Peace!”

US and Malaysia supporting peace efforts: Acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai said on Monday that both US and Malaysia are supporting the peace efforts. Thailand confirmed its participation in the talks, which were arranged by Malaysia in its role as ASEAN chair. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said State Department officials were on the ground in Malaysia to support peace efforts. “We want this conflict to end as soon as possible,” Rubio said in a statement issued early Monday in Asia.

Trump says Thailand-Cambodia ceasefire ‘an easy one’: US President Donald Trump claimed that achieving a truce between Thailand and Cambodia was an “easy” task for him, as the United States does a lot of trade with both countries. “We do a lot of trade with Thailand and Cambodia. Yet I’m reading that they’re killing each other… I say this should be an easy one for me because I settled India and Pakistan… I called the Prime Ministers of each (Thailand and Cambodia) and I said we’re not going to make a trade deal unless you settle the war… By the time I got off, I think they want to settle now… India and Pakistan were really getting ready to go at it. So getting those things settled, and if I can use trade to do that, then it’s my honour,” Trump said.

Thailand-Cambodia Border Conflict LIVE: Guns fall silent on Thai-Cambodia border

Border areas remained calm, Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai told reporters in Bangkok, although he accused Cambodian troops of violating the ceasefire early on Tuesday, which had been flagged in complaints to Malaysia, the United States and China.

Cambodia denied the charge, insisting its troops had strictly abided by the ceasefire since midnight and continued to uphold it, according to a statement by Defence Minister Tea Seiha.

Despite the initial jitters, military commanders from both sides held talks and agreed to maintain the ceasefire, stop any troop movement, and facilitate the return of the wounded and dead, Thai army spokesman Major-General Winthai Suvaree said.

Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an “immediate and unconditional” ceasefire, set to take effect at midnight tonight ending days of deadly clashes.

The truce came after US President Donald Trump warned he would block trade talks with both nations unless the fighting stopped. Prime Minister Hun Manet said it is now time to “start rebuilding trust and confidence” between the two neighbours.

Acting Thai PM Phumtham Wechayachai said that Thailand’s commitment to peace and said they negotiated “in good faith.”

Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim chaired the peace negotiations in Putrajaya, acting as ASEAN’s regional head.

Despite the agreement, a full stop to hostilities could take time, as both sides still need to verify troop withdrawals, which may require several days.

The border clashes, which flared up last week, have killed at least 33 people and displaced tens of thousands.
