British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Monday that the United Kingdom is prepared to help monitor the ceasefire in Gaza and assist in the disarmament of Hamas, drawing on lessons from the Northern Ireland peace process. 'Ready to monitor Gaza ceasefire' Speaking at a summit in Egypt, Starmer said Britain was ready to “play its full part” in making sure the current truce leads to lasting peace. “We stand ready in relation to monitoring the ceasefire and decommissioning Hamas capability and weaponry,” Starmer said, according to the Associated Press (AP). “That’s drawing on our experience in Northern Ireland and the IRA, which we dealt with in particular in relation to decommissioning.” International cooperation to rebuild Gaza Starmer made the remarks alongside Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who also played a key role in mediating the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. The British PM also expressed hope that international cooperation could ensure Gaza’s reconstruction and prevent a return to conflict. At the same summit, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he hoped US President Donald Trump who brokered the Gaza truce could now use his influence to help end the war in Ukraine.
