South Korea Plane Crash Live Updates: A team of US investigators, including representatives from Boeing, on Tuesday inspected the site of a tragic plane crash in South Korea that claimed the lives of 179 people. The crash on Sunday morning involved a Boeing 737-800 operated by the South Korean budget airline Jeju Air, leaving only two survivors among the 181 people on board. Meanwhile, hundreds of grieving family members of the victims have gathered at Muan International Airport since Sunday, awaiting the release of their loved ones’ remains and expressing frustration over the lack of timely updates from officials.

What happened at South Korea airport? A Jeju Air flight which was landing shortly after 9 am local time at the airport veered off the runway and erupted into a fireball as it slammed into a wall at the airport. In videos shared by local news agencies, the twin-engine aircraft is seen skidding down the runway with no apparent landing gear before slamming into a wall in an explosion. In an emergency meeting on Sunday, South Korea’s acting President Choi Sang-mok declared a national mourning period until January 4

Who all were on board? The 175 passengers included two Thai nationals, and the rest are believed to be South Koreans, according to the transportation ministry. The plane was a Boeing 737-800 jet operated by Jeju Air. The airlines is seeking details of the accident, including its casualties and cause, an airline spokesperson said. Country’s Transport Ministry official, in a press briefing on Monday, said that the pilot of the Jeju Air flight 7C 2216 told the air traffic control that the aircraft had suffered a bird strike and declared mayday shortly before the plane crashed on Sunday morning.

South Korea Plane Crash Live: South Korea inspects over 100 Boeing planes after crash

The investigation into Sunday's deadly plane crash in South Korea has intensified, with authorities under pressure to explain how the Boeing 737-800 lost control, killing 179 people, and to identify the remaining victims, reports The Guardian.

Families of the dead are demanding more information, while the National Police Agency is using rapid DNA analysers to speed up the identification process.

The exact cause of the crash is still unknown, with early theories centred on a bird strike, but experts are questioning the airport's layout, including a large embankment built near the end of the runway, which may have contributed to the tragedy.

South Korea Plane Crash Live: What do we know about the victims?

Only two people — both crew members — survived. They were rescued from the plane's tail section, the only part of the aircraft that remained relatively intact after the crash. One of the survivors was treated for fractures to his ribs, shoulder blade and upper spine. Ju Woong, director of the Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital who treated him, said the man told doctors he “woke up to find (himself) rescued.” The passengers were predominantly South Korean, although they included two Thai nationals. The Transport Ministry said Monday that authorities have identified 146 bodies and are collecting DNA and fingerprint samples from the other 33.

Park Han Shin, a representative of the bereaved families, said they were told that the bodies of their loved ones were so badly damaged that officials need time before returning them to their families. He called for the government to mobilize more personnel.

South Korea Plane Crash Live: Does the crash represent another setback for Boeing?

- The crash wrapped up a troubling 2024 for US aviation giant Boeing, which has grappled with safety problems, a machinists strike and plunging stock prices.

- Experts say the 737-800 aircraft is a more proven model than the company’s much-maligned 737 Max jetliners, which were linked to fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019. Still, South Korean authorities said they'll conduct safety inspections on all of the 737-800s operated by domestic airlines, including 39 by Jeju Air.

- Representatives from Boeing and the US National Transportation Safety Board were to travel to Seoul to participate in the South Korean investigation.

- On Monday, another Boeing 737-800 plane operated by Jeju Air returned to the Gimpo airport shortly after takeoff when the pilot detected a landing gear issue. Jeju Air said the issue was resolved through communication with a land-based equipment center but the pilot decided to return to Gimpo as a precautionary measure.

South Korea Plane Crash Live: What we know about the deadly Jeju Air plane crash in South Korea

South Korea has vowed thorough investigations to find what caused a plane crash that killed 179 people, saying Monday that it will also inspect all Boeing 737-800 aircraft operated by the country’s airlines. Sunday's crash, the nation's deadliest aviation disaster in decades, has sent a shock wave through South Korean society, which is already facing a political crisis that led to the successive impeachments of the country's top two officials — President Yoon Suk Yeol and Prime Minister Han Duk-soo.

What happened and what might have caused it?

- Jeju Air flight 7C 2216 departed from Bangkok and was making its landing at Muan International Airport in southern South Korea. After an initial failed landing attempt, the Boeing 737-800 plane received a bird strike warning from the ground control center.

- The pilot then issued a distress signal before the plane came down with its front landing gear closed, overshot the runway, slammed into a concrete fence, and burst into a fireball. Observers say videos of the crash showed the plane was suffering from suspected engine trouble, but the landing gear malfunction was likely the main reason for the crash.

- South Korean Transport Ministry officials said Monday they will examine whether the fence the plane hit — which housed a set of antennas designed to guide aircraft safely during landings — should have been made with lighter materials that would break more easily upon impact.

South Korea Plane Crash Live: Thai family grieves for daughter in Jeju Air crash

A family in northeastern Thailand is mourning the loss of Jongluk Duangmanee, one of two Thai nationals of the Jeju Air crash, and wishes to bring her body home for a religious ceremony.

All 175 passengers and four of the six crew were killed when the Boeing 737-800 crash-landed and skidded off the end of the runway at South Korea's Muan International Airport on Sunday.

Boonchuay Duangmanee, 77, said he must come to terms with his 45-year-old daughter's sudden death.

"I can only accept it, make peace with it," he told state broadcaster Thai PBS. "No matter what I do, my daughter won't come back."

He had felt a "sense of unease" when neighbours told him of the Jeju Air crash, he added, as his daughter often travelled with the airline. Jongluk, the third youngest in the family, had been working in South Korea for seven years and would visit her home in Udon Thani, about 500 km (310 miles) north of the Thai capital, every year.

South Korea Plane Crash Live: South Korea to inspect Boeing aircraft as it struggles to find cause of plane crash that killed 179

South Korean officials said Monday they will conduct safety inspections of all Boeing 737-800 aircraft operated by the country's airlines, as they struggle to determine what caused a plane crash that killed 179 people a day earlier.

The country's worst aviation disaster in decades on Sunday, triggered an outpouring of national sympathy. Many people worry about how effectively the South Korean government will handle the disaster as it grapples with a leadership vacuum following the recent successive impeachments of President Yoon Suk Yeol and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, the country's top two officials, amid political tumult caused by Yoon's brief imposition of martial law earlier this month.

New acting President Choi Sang-mok on Monday presided over a task force meeting on the crash and instructed authorities to conduct an emergency review of the country's aircraft operation systems.

“The essence of a responsible response would be renovating the aviation safety systems on the whole to prevent recurrences of similar incidents and building a safer Republic of South Korea,” said Choi, who is also deputy prime minister and finance minister.

The Boeing 737-800 plane operated by South Korean budget airline Jeju Air aborted its first landing attempt for reasons that aren't immediately clear. Then, during its second landing attempt, it received a bird strike warning from the ground control center before its pilot issued a distress signal. The plane landed without its front landing gear deployed, overshot the runway, slammed into a concrete fence, and burst into a fireball.

In Azerbaijan, South Korea air crashes, survivors in planes’ tail end: what studies say on seating, survival rate

On December 25, 38 of 67 people on board died when Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243 — from Baku to Gronzy in Russia’s Chechnya region — crash-landed near Aktau in Kazakhstan. The aircraft (an Embraer 190) was purportedly hit mistakenly by Russian air defence and was forced to divert from its intended flight path.

Then on Sunday (December 29), a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 aircraft operating a flight from Bangkok crashed during an emergency landing at Muan International Airport in South Korea. Of the 181 people on board, only two are reported to have survived the crash, which is now being seen as the worst aircraft disaster in the history of South Korea.

Even as investigations are on into the causes behind these accidents, it can be inferred that the two crashes were not similar on most counts. Be that as it may, there is one commonality — the bulk of the survivors were seated in the rear part of the aircraft. Read more.

What is a bird strike and how does it affect aviation?

Bird strikes generally happen when the aircraft pass through areas where birds are concentrated. Certain geographic locations, such as areas near wetlands, garbage dumps, and open fields, provide habitats that attract large flocks of birds. These locations are common near airports, making bird strikes a particular concern for aviation safety.

A bird strike occurs when a bird, or a group of birds, flies into the path of an aircraft. Birds often fly at altitudes that intersect with the flight path of airplanes, especially during takeoff or landing. Birds in flight are often unaware of the approaching aircraft until it’s too late. Additionally, birds are more likely to fly in flocks, which can create a higher chance of a collision with multiple birds at once.
