Amazon AWS Global Outage: Some of the world’s biggest web applications including Snapchat, Duolingo, and Zoom are facing outage, in what appears to be an issue affecting the Amazon Web Services, BBC reported on Monday.

Users have reported a spike in issues affecting these platforms, according to platform outage monitor Downdetector – with more than 5,000 issues flagged by Snapchat users, the report said.

The AWS outage is the first major internet disruption since CrowdStrike malfunction in 2024 that hobbled technology systems in hospitals, banks and airports globally, Reuters reported.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), a major part of the retail giant Amazon, in an update on its website stated, “We are seeing significant signs of recovery. Most requests should now be succeeding. “We continue to work through a backlog of queued requests. We will continue to provide additional information.”

Earlier, AWS flagged the issue stating that there were “increased error rates and latencies for multiple AWS Services in the US-EAST-1 Region”. “Over 500 companies, across all of our 66 sites, are reporting issues,” it added.

Engineers are “immediately engaged and are actively working on both mitigating the issue, and fully understanding the root cause”, it highlighted, as per the BBC report.

The major platforms reported to be facing an outage include: Snapchat, Zoom, Roblox, Clash Royale, My Fitness Pal, Life360, Paypal’s Venmo, Chime, Clash of Clans, Fortnite, Canva, Wordle, Signal, Coinbase, Duolingo, Slack, Smartsheet, PokemonGo, Epic Games, PlayStation Network, Peloton, Rocket League, amongst others.

However, some of these apps might be working just fine for some, BBC noted.

Perplexity, Coinbase, Amazon Prime Video down

AI startup Perplexity, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and trading app Robinhood attributed the outages to AWS.

“Perplexity is down right now. The root cause is an AWS issue. We’re working on resolving it,” Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas wrote on X.

Amazon’s shopping website, PrimeVideo and Alexa were also facing issues, according to Downdetector, Reuters reported.

Uber rival Lyft’s app was also down for thousands of users in the US, as per the report.

Messaging app Signal’s President Meredith Whittaker confirmed on X that the company’s platform was hit by the AWS outage as well.

Banks, telecom services in UK affected

Britain’s Lloyd Bank, Bank of Scotland and telecom service providers Vodafone and BT were also facing issues, according to DownDetector’s UK website.

The country’s tax, payments and customs authority HMRC’s website too was hit by the outage, Reuters noted.

However, billionaire Elon Musk, the owner of social media company X, said that his platform continued to work. “X works,” he stated.
