The Associated Press (AP) reported that the aircraft may have been trying to land at New Bedford Regional Airport, located near the crash site. However, officials said the pilot had not filed a flight plan or provided passenger information before the incident.
“Traffic in both directions has been shut down near the crash site,” the state’s Department of Transportation said.
The National Weather Service said that at the time of the crash, the region was being hit by a nor’easter bringing strong winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour (48 to 64 kilometres per hour) and steady rain.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
