A small plane crashed early Monday along a highway in southeastern Massachusetts, sending thick smoke into the air and forcing authorities to close a stretch of Interstate 195, according to the Massachusetts State Police.

In videos shared by passing drivers, flames and smoke could be seen rising from debris scattered along the road. Police said it was not yet clear whether anyone had been injured.

The Associated Press (AP) reported that the aircraft may have been trying to land at New Bedford Regional Airport, located near the crash site. However, officials said the pilot had not filed a flight plan or provided passenger information before the incident.

“Traffic in both directions has been shut down near the crash site,” the state’s Department of Transportation said.

The National Weather Service said that at the time of the crash, the region was being hit by a nor’easter bringing strong winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour (48 to 64 kilometres per hour) and steady rain.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
