The New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, who is favoured to win the November 4 election, called out the Republican party for trying to push for his deportation from the country and accused President Donald Trump’s party of running an agenda with that of “cruelty and punishment,” The Guardian reported.

At least two US House Republicans, Congressman Randy Fine of Florida and Andy Ogles of Tennessee, who have been a staunch proponents of President Trump, are pushing the Justice Department to look into the path of citizenship of Mamdani and the attempts by the Republican leaders have been condemned by Democratic officials and Muslim civil rights groups, calling it “racist and anti-Muslim”.

Republican leader Fine has urged the federal government to review all the naturalisation over the past 30 years in the United States, “starting with Mamdani.” In an interview to New York Post, Fine said, “I just think we need to take a hard look at how these folks became citizens, and if there is any fraud or any violation of the rules we need to denaturalize and deport.”

Mamdani, who is a dual citizen of US and Uganda, criticised the rhetoric of Congressman Fine and other Republican leaders who are vying for his deportation, and defended himself by mentioning his thumping victory in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary held in June and the federal government shutdown which began on October 1.

In an interview to MSNBC, Mamdani said, “In a moment where Americans across the country are deeply fearful of whether they can afford the basic dignities of life, be it healthcare, be it groceries, be it their rent, the focus of the Republican party is to try and denaturalize the Muslim guy that won the New York City Democratic primary with the most votes in our city’s history?”

Mamdani also criticised his prime mayoral opponent Andrew Cuomo, the former governor of New York who had resigned as he faced impeachment proceedings amid sexual harassment allegations in 2021. “I think Islamophobia is something that is endemic to politics across this country,” the NYC mayoral candidate added.
