Multiple people have been shot at a Mormon church in Michigan and the shooter is down, police said Sunday. The shooting occurred at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Detroit, local police said in a social media post.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said in a statement: “My heart is breaking for the Grand Blanc community. Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable,” AP reported.
The church is located in a residential part of Grand Blanc, a community of around 8,000 people near Flint. It is surrounded by a car park and a large lawn and stands close to a Jehovah’s Witnesses’ church.
The shooting took place just one day after Russell M. Nelson, the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died at the age of 101. Following church protocol, his successor is expected to be Dallin H. Oaks, AP said.
