Israel’s military said on Sunday it carried out an airstrike in Beirut’s southern suburbs that targeted a member of the Iran-aligned Hezbollah group, Reuters reported.

Residents in the area told Reuters they heard the sound of warplanes before the blast hit a main road. A Reuters reporter at the scene said people rushed out of their buildings fearing more strikes.

At least two dozen people were wounded and taken to nearby hospitals. Hezbollah and Lebanon’s health ministry have not commented.

Before the strike, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu briefed his cabinet. According to Reuters, he said: “We will continue to do whatever is necessary to prevent Hezbollah from re-establishing its ability to threaten us.”

Meanwhile, Israel has increased its airstrikes in southern Lebanon in recent weeks. It says the operations aim to stop Hezbollah from rebuilding its military presence along the border.

Israel accuses Hezbollah of trying to rearm since a US-backed ceasefire last year. Hezbollah says it has kept to the terms requiring it to withdraw fighters from the border area and allow the Lebanese army to deploy there.
