A 39-year-old Indian-origin man was sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his mother at her home in Birmingham, UK. Surjit Singh, who admitted to murdering 76-year-old Mohinder Kaur last September, will serve a minimum of 15 years before being eligible for parole, PTI reported. The sentence was handed down at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday.
According to court proceedings, Singh fatally attacked his mother following an argument over a television remote control. He was intoxicated at the time, with later tests confirming the presence of alcohol and cocaine in his blood, as per the PTI report. Singh, who lived as his widowed mother’s caretaker, is said to have lost his temper after she criticised him for being intoxicated.
The court heard how Singh repeatedly kicked and stamped on his mother during a “sustained attack over a considerable period of time”, with the latter being unable to protect herself, reported PTI.
West Midlands Police said Singh told a relative about the assault before leaving the home on Clarence Road in Birmingham’s Soho area. The concerned family member immediately dialled the police, who forced their way into the property and found Mohinder Kaur lying injured on the living room floor.
Kaur was taken to Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where she was pronounced dead later that night. Singh returned to the scene a few hours later and was arrested by officers who were still present at the residence, PTI noted.
While in custody, Singh admitted: “I didn’t mean to do it. I just lost my head,” PTI quoted. Police confirmed that Mohinder had died from injuries consistent with multiple blows, however, it was unclear whether a weapon was used in the attack.
West Midlands Police Detective Inspector, Nick Barnes, said: “This senseless killing has torn apart a family, and our thoughts remain with everyone affected.”
