A 30-year-old Indian student from Haryana, Vijay Kumar Sheoran, died after being stabbed in Worcester, United Kingdom, on 25 November. His family and local leaders have appealed to the Indian government for help to bring his body back and to ensure a full investigation.

What police said

According to a statement on the West Mercia Police website, officers found a 30-year-old man with serious injuries on Barbourne Road in Worcester at around 4.15am on 25 November. “He was taken to hospital but sadly died later that day,” the statement said.

Police confirmed that “five men were arrested on suspicion of murder and are now on bail as the investigation continues.” A sixth man was also arrested but later released with no further action.

Who was Vijay Kumar Sheoran?

Vijay Kumar, from Jagrambas village in Charkhi Dadri district, Haryana, had earlier worked with the Central Board of Excise and Customs. His brother Ravi Kumar wrote in a letter to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar that Vijay had resigned this year to study in the UK. He was enrolled at the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol.

Ravi Kumar requested government support to bring his brother’s remains back to India, saying the family was facing difficulty with formalities, paperwork and costs involved in the UK.

“Our family is devastated by this unfortunate incident… we request the support of the Ministry in bringing my brother’s mortal remains back to India,” he wrote, according to the post.

He also said he suspected the involvement of individuals from Haryana and Punjab. Reports in Indian media have carried similar claims.

Appeals from Haryana MLA

Charkhi Dadri MLA Sunil Satpal Sangwan posted on X that he was “deeply shocked and saddened” by Vijay’s death following a stabbing in Worcester. He urged the central government to step in quickly to support the family.

He wrote that the authorities should ensure “urgent repatriation of his mortal remains to India” and called for “a transparent, fair, and time-bound investigation so that justice is served.”

Sangwan added in his post that he stood with the family “in this unbearable moment of grief”.

Vijay’s family has appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs and other officials, asking for help to coordinate with UK authorities, bring the body home and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. They have also asked anyone with information about the incident to contact Vijay’s brother, Ravi Kumar.
