Disgraced Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein will be tried for a third time in a sexual assault case. New York Judge Curtis Farber said on Wednesday that he wants the trial to take place before the end of this year.
The 73-year-old Weinstein will face trial in the sexual assault case of Jessica Mann, in which a jury in New York could not reach a verdict in June. Following this, a mistrial was declared.
The same jury found Weinstein guilty in June of sexually assaulting former “Project Runway” production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006 and not guilty of assaulting Polish Kaja Sokola, a former runway model.
Weinstein will now face a retrial on the third-degree rape charge in the case. His third trial “needs to be tried this year,” the judge told attorneys.
Prosecutors said they do not expect the third trial to take long.
Weinstein, who was one of the biggest names in Hollywood, is currently serving a 16-year prison sentence for rape in California, though he has denied any wrongdoing.
Weinstein’s downfall began in 2017 when several women in the film industry came forward accusing him of sexual assault that spanned decades. Accusations against Weinstein also gave rise to the #MeToo movement, which later spread across the world.
More than 80 women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct, but he has so far denied having non-consensual sex with anyone.
In 2020, Weinstein was convicted of rape and criminal sexual act and sentenced to 23 years in prison, but in 2024, New York’s highest court overturned the conviction, prompting the retrial.
Weinstein will also be back in court on on September 30 when he will be sentenced for the guilty verdict in Haley’s case.
