(AP Photo/Jehand Alshrafi) The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Thursday announced that the Red Cross has received a coffin from Gaza, containing the remains of a deceased hostage. According to the IDF, the remains will then be brought to Israel for identification.
Earlier in the day, the armed wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad said that they would hand over the body of a hostage at 8 pm local time.
Islamic Jihad, which is allied with Hamas and also seized hostages during the October 7, 2023, attack that precipitated the Gaza war, said the body was recovered in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis.

In a video posted by Al Jazeera, Hamas members were seen placing the photo of one of the hostages who had been murdered and abducted by the Islamic Jihad on October 7, 2023, on the body bag.
Under an October ceasefire deal, Hamas released all 20 surviving hostages still held in Gaza in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and wartime detainees held by Israel.
The agreement also provided for the return of the remains of 28 hostages in exchange for the remains of 360 militants.
Until Thursday, the remains of four hostages were still held in Gaza. They are Meny Godard, Ran Gvili, Dror Or, and Sudthisak Rinthalak.

Last week, Hamas had also returned the body of IDF soldier Hadar Goldin, who was killed by the militants in June 2014. His body was returned to Israel after more than 11 years of captivity in Gaza.
