US President Donald Trump has said that his administration expects Ukraine to decide by Thursday whether it will accept a US-backed plan to end the war with Russia.

“I’ve had a lot of deadlines, but if things are working well, you tend to extend the deadlines. But Thursday is it,” Trump said in a Fox News Radio interview on Friday.

According to a draft of the 28-point proposal, the plan would require Ukraine to give up territory to Russia and accept US “de facto” recognition of Crimea and other areas Russia has taken. It would also place limits on the size of Ukraine’s military. Many of these points were rejected in earlier talks by Ukraine and European officials.

Trump said the deadline was set to move the process forward but did not rule out extensions if needed. He also said he does not intend to lift US sanctions on Russia.

“I’m not doing anything having to do with taking back sanctions,” Trump said in the Fox News interview.
