A fire at a garment factory and warehouse in Dhaka, Bangladesh, has killed at least 16 people and left several others injured, authorities said Tuesday.
As per a report by Associated Press, Fire official Talha bin Jashim said the blaze broke out in the Mirpur area and is believed to have started on the third floor of the seven-story garment building. He confirmed that rescuers have recovered several bodies.
Authorities said the fire was brought under control by the evening, though the rescue effort is ongoing. Several people were treated for injuries at nearby hospitals, and some remain unaccounted for.
Bangladesh’s garment industry, the world’s second-largest after China, employs around 4 million people, most of them women. The sector generates roughly $40 billion annually from exports, primarily to the United States and Europe.
