The office said an Afghan man who survived the incident swam back to shore and alerted emergency services shortly after 1 am. He told them 18 people had set out on the boat before it began taking on water.
Rescue teams later found another survivor who managed to reach Celebi Island near Bodrum. They also recovered 14 bodies from the sea.
“Search and rescue efforts for other irregular migrants considered missing continue with four coast guard boats, one coast guard special diving team and one helicopter,” the governor’s office said, according to Reuters.
The Aegean Sea is a common route for people trying to reach Europe from Turkey, which hosts millions of refugees from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Nearly 4,55,000 irregular migrants were intercepted in Turkey in 2019, mostly from Afghanistan and Syria, official data shows. More than 122,000 have been caught so far this year.
