An intense thunderstorm coupled with heavy rains swept through Delhi in the early hours of Friday, bringing with it powerful gusts of wind that reached up to 80 kmph.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported intense thunderstorm activity between 5 to 6 am with strong winds across several areas in the Capital including Safdarjung, Jaffarpura and Lodi Road among others.

According to data released by IMD, the highest wind speed was recorded at Safdarjung, where gusts reached 80 kmph at 5:10 am. Close behind was Pragati Maidan, with winds hitting 78 kmph at 5:30 am, and Palam, which registered 74 kmph at 5:19 am.

The early morning weather disturbance led to waterlogging, uprooted trees due to gusty winds in several parts of the Capital leading to slowed down traffic movement in the city. Delhi CM Rekha Gupta directed officials to identify waterlogged areas and take immediate action. More than 200 flights were cancelled or delayed owing to weather disturbances.
Waterlogging was reported in Dwarka Underpass, South Extension, Major Somnath Marg, Ring Road, Minto Road, RK Puram, Khanpur, ITO and Lajpat Nagar which led to major traffic congestion and public inconvenience.
Visuals from all across Delhi show trees uprooted, vehicles submerged in deep waters. A family of four, a mother with her three children were also killed in Delhi’s Dwarka following strong winds.
