Sing along with this groovy a cappella medley of popular Malayalam songs for Onam

The medley included beautiful folk songs like 'Kuttanadan Punjayille', 'Ayyapente Amma Neyappam Chuttu' — which are all loved by Malayalis across the world.

For all Malayalis, Onam is the most favourite of all festivals. Pookalams are made, sadhya is had (complete with four varieties of payasams) and wearing kasavus and mundus it’s the time to celebrate tradition and get together with family and friends. And at such a gathering, singing and dancing are natural fall-outs.

Which is probably why this group of youngsters decided to celebrate Onam with an a cappella medley of popular Malayalam songs.

Mumbai-based band Aflatunes decided to give Onam a delightful a cappella twist this year. The cheerful group started with ‘Ayyepente Amma Neyappam Chuttu’ — a popular folk nursery rhyme that every Malayali, be it a child to a 60-year-old would know by heart and sing along! Which is probably why Aflatunes’ latest is easily becoming a favourite with many. Almost all the songs they have chosen are familiar to Malayalis, so don’t be surprised if you and/or your friends start humming along.

Other popular songs in the band’s medley are ‘Kuttanaadan Punjayile’ — the popular folk song sang during the snake boat races during Onam, and ‘Maangalyam’ — the opening song of the hit Malayalam movie Bangalore Days. Do we need more reasons to love the mash-up? Don’t think so!

And guess what, these guy pulled this off with only three Malayalis in the band, while the rest of them had to be taught the language!

The girls clad in the traditional Kerala attire of kasavu sari and the guys in shirt and mundu looked nothing less than dapper while they made some cool music this Onam. The band has previously made similar quirky covers of songs like ‘Aaja aaja, mai hoon pyaar tera, mile sur mera tumhaara’ and even ‘RadioActive’ — originally by Imagine Dragons.
