Sriharsha Ganti, a Carnatic singer who shares videos of him singing on Instagram, posted a video of his great grandmother, who passed away two days ago, singing with him. As Ganti sings the sargam, the 92-year-old tears up, her love and pride shining through. She joins him, and together, they sing in harmony.
The video went viral with over a million views, moving many to tears. What made it more endearing is the fact that the old woman, Maddala Mahalakshmi, a music teacher who also taught veena, couldn’t recognise family members, but did not forget the songs.
In the caption of the reel, Ganti wrote, “I fondly celebrate my Great Grandmother, Smt Maddala Mahalakshmi. She is an embodiment of Music. She has given us this precious Sangeetham, an heirloom that she so freely and lavishly blessed us with. Her life is an example of what profound power music holds over the soul. At the age of 92, she couldn’t recognise us…but the songs she never forgot. Ragas were her friends and the swaras obeyed her command, up until the very end. She is the music that pours out through me. We are because she is.”
