Amanda Seyfried impressed Joni Mitchell fans with her impeccable cover of California on The Tonight Show. In the March 4 episode, she picked up a dulcimer and delivered a delicate rendition of the 1971 classic, earning instant praise from host Jimmy Fallon and the audience.
“Sitting in a park in Paris, France,” Seyfried sang, her voice reminiscent of Mitchell’s. By the time she reached the chorus—”California, I’m coming home”—it was clear she had the crowd hooked. Fallon, amused, jumped out of his seat. “What are you talking about? Playing the dulcimer? Are you kidding me?” he said as the audience applauded Seyfried.
The performance didn’t just resonate with viewers, it got the ultimate stamp of approval when Mitchell’s official Instagram account reshared the clip. That only fueled the buzz, with fans and celebrities alike calling for Seyfried to portray the folk icon in a biopic.
Charlie Puth commented, “Oh my goodness”. Jameela Jamil responded saying, “Get. That. Biopic. Girl.” Meanwhile, Jodie Turner-Smith wrote, “One of my absolute favourite Joni Mitchell songs!!!”
Social media users echoed the excitement, with one pointing out that Seyfried has always had the vocal chops: “She was in both Mamma Mia and Les Misérables and sang well in both. The only shock here is that more people haven’t already recognised her for her voice.” AnSeyfried other user wrote, “It’s when Karen from Mean Girls actually got her PhD in Music.”
Seyfried is currently involved in the promotion of her new project Long Bright River, a limited series. This crime drama, based on Liz Moore’s novel, features Seyfried as Mickey, a police officer patrolling a Philadelphia neighborhood impacted by the opioid crisis. The series is about Mickey’s search for her missing sister amid a series of murders.
