The latest iMac, powered by Apple Silicon M4, looks almost identical to the iMac M3, except for the new colour options. However, under the hood, the iMac M4 is a completely different device, with new hardware and software capabilities. Here is a rundown of all the major differences between the iMac M4 and the iMac M3, which, according to Apple, is the best all-in-one computer for AI.
The new iMac M4 gets an upgraded chip with 10 CPU/GPU cores on the high-end variant, while even the fully specced iMac M3 comes with only an 8-core CPU and a 10-core GPU. On top of that, even the base variant of the iMac M4 now comes with at least 16 GB of RAM, configurable up to 32 GB, while the entry-level variant of the iMac M3 offers only 8 GB of RAM and can be configured with up to 24 GB at most. The extra CPU cores and additional memory will help the latest iMac M4 deliver more performance. When it comes to Apple Intelligence, both the iMac M3 and M4 are eligible. In fact, even the older iMac M1 also supports Apple Intelligence.
The new chip also means the iMac M4 can now support up to two 6K resolution external screens or a single 8K display with up to a 120Hz refresh rate via the Thunderbolt 4 USB-C port.
The iMac M4 now comes with an upgraded Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad. All three accessories are colour-matched to the Mac itself, while the official accessories that came with the iMac M3 featured a Lightning port. However, the USB-C charging port on the new Magic Mouse is still at the bottom, which means you cannot use it while charging.
The iMac M4 gets a new 12 MP Centre Stage camera, which can take sharp images and videos. But the video recording capability is still limited to 1080p, while the iMac M3 comes with an HD camera, which can still record 1080p videos. However, due to the higher pixel count, the images or videos produced on the iMac M4 will have more detail and will be more true to life. While the display specifications between the iMac M4 and M3 remain identical, the iMac M4 offers a choice between regular glass protection and nano-texture glass protection, which can further reduce light reflections without affecting picture quality or colour science.
There is no price difference between the iMac M4 and iMac M3, which makes the iMac M4 even more compelling, as it now offers double the RAM, an upgraded camera, and the new chip, which makes it slightly better at gaming. With a starting price of Rs 1,34,900, the iMac M4 is definitely a great pick among the two. However, if you already have an iMac M3, it might not feel like much of an upgrade.
