At WWDC 2024, Apple unveiled several new iOS 18 features. The upcoming operating system will offer more customisation options and privacy-enhancing functionalities that will further enhance the overall user experience. Here’s a quick look at some of them.

Apple says iOS 18 will let users place their icons however they want. This means you can freely move your icons wherever you want. The upcoming operating system also gets a new feature called Dark Mode that tints app icons with the colour of your choice to create a more personalised look.

Similar to the Material You design language on Android, you can also sync your icon colours with the wallpaper or set a custom colour for icons.

Apple has also redesigned the Control Center. It now supports tiles from third-party apps. While Android only lets you edit quick tiles, iOS 18 will also let you edit the tile style, size and layout. Also, you can swipe down from the top right of the screen lets you switch between multiple Control Center screens.

Another nifty feature that has been available on Android for years is Lock Apps, which, as the name suggests, lets you lock apps behind Face ID, Touch ID or password. If you want to remove these apps from the home screen, they can be hidden in a locked folder.

iOS 18 will also get a more privacy-friendly way of sharing contacts with apps. Now, users will be able to choose if they want to allow the app access for all contacts or limit it to a select few. You can also choose to hide these apps from Siri and in search results.

The company is also introducing a new feature called Tap to Cash that lets you send cash by simply holding one phone near another.

iOS 18 is also getting a dedicated ‘Game Mode’ which cuts down on background activities. The update will also improve connection with wireless game controllers and AirPods.

Apple is also bringing some new functionalities to first-party apps like Messages, which now lets users react with any emoji and schedule messages so you can send them later. With iOS 18, you can make text bold, italic, and underline and strike through parts of text. The Messages app also supports Satellite-based text messaging and offers automatic suggestions as well.

The built-in Mail app is also getting some Gmail-like categorisation features like automatic sorting of emails that contain transaction information, updates and promotions. Similar to Google Photos, Apple Photos will also be able to identify and group faces of people and pets.
