Sony India announced the launch of its FE 50mm F1.4 GM lens. According to the company, this premium e-mount lens is compact and lightweight despite its large aperture.

The lens is rated for a minimum focusing distance of 0.41 metres and maximum magnification is 0.16 metres when autofocus is used. The minimum focusing distance is 0.38 metres and the maximum magnification is 0.16x when autofocus is used.

The lens comes with a 67 mm thread mount, meaning filters that work with Sony’s FE 24mm F1.4GM and FE 35mm F1.4 GM lenses will work with this as well.

According to Sony, the FE 50mm F1.4 GM lens comes with autofocus that is nearly twice as fast as “conventional models with the same specifications. The lens has XD linear motors and control algorithms that optimise responses to the control signals so that focus is more precise, vibrations are minimised and autofocus operates more quietly. This should make the lens appropriate for shooting videos.

The lens has an 11-blade circular aperture which offers “sharp realism” throughout the maximum aperture range, according to the company. When shooting wide open at F1.4, the lens should be able to offer creamy bokeh and great depth of field that can separate subjects clearly from the background.

The FE 50mm F1.4 GM lens comes with two extreme aspherical elements that are aimed at effectively correcting field curvature and aberrations. It is built with one extra-low dispersion glass element that is aimed at suppressing chromatic aberrations to maintain clear and sharp images without colour bleeding.

It also comes with Sony’s Nano ARE Coating II, which suppresses reflections even in a backlit scene.
