‘Mini Apps’ within ChatGPT: From Spotify to Canva, here are some apps you can try

These features will be available to all ChatGPT users (except in the EU), allowing them to interact with other platforms without leaving the ChatGPT interface.

OpenAI is transforming ChatGPT from a simple AI chatbot into a central hub. Starting October 6, users can interact with popular services like Spotify, Canva, Expedia, Figma, Coursera, and Zillow directly within their chat.

This new feature essentially turns these services into “mini apps” that can be accessed from within the AI chatbot. This means that users do not have to leave the ChatGPT app to use these apps. For example, you could type “Spotify, make me a Diwali party playlist” or “Canva, design a poster for my event”. The relevant app will then jump in and handle the request directly from the chat window.

OpenAI calls these new connections “integrations” that plug app controls directly into the AI chatbot. It’s similar to how some apps, like Telegram and Discord, have embedded smaller apps within their platforms, but here, the experience is guided by the AI conversation. You can continue to chat with ChatGPT while giving it instructions on how to use the other app.

Spotify

After linking their Spotify account to the AI chatbot, users can ask it to create a playlist with their favourite alternative rock bands or search for an artist’s most recent album. Based on a previous conversation they had with ChatGPT, the user can also ask Spotify for music or podcast recommendations. It will also provide them with a list of songs they can access and listen to through the Spotify app.

Spotify states that while Premium customers can create a “fresh and fully personalised selection of tracks”, free users can find music from playlists that are already available in the app such as New Music Friday and Discover Weekly.

Canva

Users can also design, preview, and modify their designs using the Canva app within ChatGPT. For instance, they can ask Canva to “create an Instagram post for an upcoming sale.”

Canva in ChatGPT will then provide full-screen design previews, which users may further edit using prompts to change wording or make them fit a certain theme. If they’re not satisfied with the design, users can export the file to Canva and continue editing it.

Figma

Similar to ChatGPT’s interaction with Canva, the Figma app may assist with creating diagrams from files on a user’s computer, suggesting changes to pre-existing charts, and coming up with new ideas for visualising certain data points. By choosing the “Edit in Figma” button, you can begin editing the chart or diagram using Figma.

Other apps including Uber, DoorDash, Instacart, OpenTable, Target, Peloton, Tripadvisor, and AllTrails will be coming to ChatGPT soon, as per a report by The Verge. Later this year, OpenAI will also start allowing a wider range of developers to submit apps of their own for the ChatGPT integration, provided they adhere to its developer and design guidelines.
