Google introduces new LLMs and IndicGenBench AI tool for Indian developers at I/O Connect

Google also announced the expansion of Google Wallet API for Indian developers at the I/O Connect Bengaluru event.

Google on Wednesday announced several updates to its existing generative AI Large Language Models (LLMs) such as Gemini and Gemma during its second I/O Connect event in Bengaluru. Google also confirmed that developers can finally access the expanded context window with up to 2 million parameters on the latest Gemini 1.5 Pro model. Similarly, the company also introduced Gemma 2, a language model with up to 27 billion parameters for developers.

During the keynote, Ambarish Kenghe, Vice President, Google India, said, “We are committed to empowering Indian innovators to harness AI’s full potential, creating solutions that not only address India’s unique needs but also shape the future of AI globally. The opportunities with multimodal, mobile, and multilingual AI are immense, and we’re thrilled to be a part of India’s AI journey”.

IndicGenBench is the first benchmark tool from the company that has been developed to measure the performance of an AI model for Indian languages.

As Indian developers can now access Google Application Programming Interface (API), and the company also announced India-specific pricing for Google Maps Platforms, which is said to lower the cost by 70 per cent on most APIs. It is also collaborating with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and offers up to 90 per cent off on select Google Maps Platforms APIs. The tech giant will also offer up to $350,000 in Google Cloud credits for Indian developers to boost development.

According to Google, over 1.5 million developers are using Gemini models globally. Google also stated that it has already integrated Gemini into its most popular products such as Chrome, Gmail, Maps, Drive, and more, which come in three models – Gemini Pro, Gemini Flash, and Gemini Nano. Google also announced that Gemini Nano with multimodality will be coming to select Pixel devices later this year.

Meanwhile, the Google DeepMind India team announced several updates, including the expansion of Project Vaani in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), which offers over 14,000 hours of speech data across 58 languages, collected from 80,000 speakers in 80 districts for developers.

India has the highest number of users for some of Google’s products such as Lens and voice search.
