You can translate conversations on the fly using Google Translate's real-time audio tools. (Image: Google)The Google Translate app on mobile has evolved into an incredibly useful translation tool, providing multiple options for translating conversations and speeches in real time. Whether you need to quickly translate a phrase on the fly or have an extended back-and-forth dialogue with someone who speaks another language, the app has you covered. Here’s an overview of the different conversation features available and how to use them.
Google Translate’s basic live audio translation mode is perfect for getting quick translations of short phrases or questions while travelling or interacting with someone who speaks a different language. This on-the-fly translation requires minimal setup and can translate spoken words almost instantly.
Here’s how to use it:
– Open the Google Translate app
– Set your “from” and “to” languages
– Tap the microphone icon at the bottom
– Speak your phrase
– Google Translate will display the text translation immediately
– Tap the speaker icon to hear the translated audio playback
The one limitation is that you have to tap the mic each time to reactivate translation, so it’s best for quick exchanges rather than long conversations.
Need to translate lectures, lengthy presentations, or other extended speech? Google Translate’s Transcribe mode is made for translating long-form audio by providing continuous, real-time transcription and translation.
Transcribe mode adds the ability to convert speech to translated text for as long as needed, making it possible to translate entire lectures, presentations, or conversations. The translated transcription is displayed on your screen in real time and can also be saved for later reference or sharing.
Here’s how to use it:
– Open Google Translate, choose your languages
– Tap the Transcribe option at the bottom of the screen
– Tap the mic to begin translation
– Tap stop when finished
– Save the transcription if desired by tapping the Star icon in the top right corner
Keep in mind that this feature currently works for select languages – unfortunately, none of them Indian.
Google Translate’s Conversation mode takes real-time translation to the next level by detecting who is speaking and automatically translating between two languages. This makes it possible to have natural, flowing conversations with people who speak different languages.
Conversation mode is ideal for social situations, business meetings, school settings, and medical appointments requiring two-way dialogue between languages. Google Translate detects the language being spoken and provides instant translations so you can hold a normal discussion without constantly having to activate the mic.
Here’s how to use it:
– Open the app, select languages
– Tap the Conversation mode icon
– Start talking. Translate will automatically detect the languages being spoken and translate one into the other
– For easier conversation, tap the speech bubbles icon to split the screen so you see translations for both languages
With its audio translation superpowers, Google Translate makes the world a little smaller. Next time you need to communicate across language divides, let it lend a hand.
