Google is reportedly working on its own standalone mixed-reality headset. The headset is reportedly not based on company’s Daydream, the mobile VR platform announced at Google I/O 2016 in May.

According to Recode, Google has killed its own VR project which was aimed at competing with Oculus. However, it seems Google is putting more focus on its mobile VR platform in a push to more grander hardware.

While Google may have shunted its Oculus competitor, the Engadget reports Google has been engaging developers to work on a high-end headset. The Engadget further notes that, “Daydream is not the company’s long-term plan for virtual and augmented reality.”

According to Wall Street Journal, the Google mixed-reality headset will feature outward-facing cameras and a Movidius chip to track the motion of a user’s head.

Microsoft is the only company to have showcased its augmented reality headset. Microsoft’s Hololens is powered by Windows 10 and has been criticised for smaller field of view.

While Google has declined to comment on its mixed-reality headset plans, the device could be important for the future of mixed-reality headset.
