Apple’s next surprise product launch event is just hours away. Unlike the September event, which was primarily focused on iPhones, the “Scary Fast” launch event is expected to be all about Macs. The announcement is expected to include the new iMac, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro, all powered by Apple Silicon M3. Unlike most Apple events, the upcoming event is scheduled on October 31, at 5:30 a.m. IST, happening at an unusual hour, at least in India. Cupertino will livestream the launch event on Apple.com, Apple TV, YouTube, and other major social media platforms.

Apple is expected to announce the third-generation Apple Silicon for Macs, which is likely to be called M3. Just like the A17 Pro chip that powers the iPhone 15 Pro series, the M3, M3 Pro, and the M3 Max are expected to be fabbed using TSMC’s 3nm process, which should help Apple deliver an exceptional power efficiency when compared to the M2 lineup.
The new M3 chips are likely to be more capable and power efficient when compared to their predecessors. According to a report by Bloomberg, the most powerful M3 Max is speculated to include a 16-core CPU and a 40-core GPU, making it the most powerful processor in the Apple Silicon lineup.
Not just that, just like the A17 Pro, the M3 series of processors are also likely to be capable of ray-tracing, a technique used on graphics cards to offer photorealistic image quality in video games. This means, for the first time ever, Apple could position the new Macs for serious gamers.
According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple is likely to introduce the refreshed 24-inch all-in-one iMac at the launch event, which is said to be powered by the baseline M3 chip. In terms of look and feel, it is expected to be similar to the original iMac M1, introduced in 2021, however, Apple has been said to have improved the manufacturing process by reshuffling the internal components. The new M3 is said to have 10 CPU cores with 15 per cent higher clock speed and it is also said to be 30 per cent more power efficient than the M2 chip.
According to an earlier report by DigiTimes, Apple is likely to announce two high-performance MacBook Pro variants at the launch event, one featuring a 14-inch screen, followed by a bigger 16-inch variant. Both iterations are expected to be available in both M3 Pro and M3 Max configurations with support for more memory and storage. Given this is a mid-cycle refresh, coming just 11 months after the launch of the M2 MacBook Pro series, there might not be any major design changes.
Like previous generation MacBook Pros, these devices might not support manual memory or storage upgrades. While the M3 Pro is said to feature a 12-core CPU and a 38-core CPU, the most powerful M3 Max will have an 18-core CPU and a 40-core GPU with support for 32 GB, 64 GB, and even 96 GB memory options for heavy users. These Macs will ship with the latest MacOS Sonoma. Cupertino might announce a refreshed Magic Mouse, keyboard, trackpad, and even an upgraded AirPods Max with a USB-C port.
Qualcomm recently announced its M2 Max competitor — Snapdragon X Elite at its summit, which is touted to be more efficient and capable than the M2 Max, making it the most capable Arm-based chip. With the M3 launch, Apple might be able to regain the lead in the arm-chip race leaderboard.
