Apple might launch 24-inch iMac powered M2 and M2 Pro chips

Apart from an upgraded processor, the refreshed 24-inch iMac might also feature a new GPU that offers hardware-based ray tracing.

Apple is reportedly working on a new 24-inch iMac which might be powered by the company’s in-house developed M2 and M2 Pro chips.

According to the Japanese publication Mac Otakara, the Cupertino-based tech giant is working on a new 24-inch iMac that will bring much-needed upgrades like Thunderbolt 4 ports, Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6E support. It is also expected to come in M2 and M2 Pro configurations.

It goes on to say that some configurations of the iMac 2020 are facing up to one-month delays on Apple online stores in various parts of the world and it is uncertain if an iMac refresh is coming anytime soon. While the tech giant has upgraded most of its offerings to the newer M2 chipset, the only Macs sold with the old chip and design include the MacBook Air 2020 and iMac 2021 (review).

However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has reiterated several times in the last few months that the next iMac will feature Apple’s upcoming M3 chipset. Known supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also said Apple is unlikely to launch a new Macbook with the M3 chip this year.

To give you a quick recap, the M3 chip is said to offer huge performance and power improvements over the M2 chip, which is based on TSMC’s 5nm process node. Some speculations also suggest that the upcoming chip will have an integrated GPU that supports hardware ray tracing. However, these chips are rumoured to launch sometime in the middle of 2024.
