A few days after Apple unveiled its first-ever Mixed Reality headset ‘Vision Pro’, rumour has it that the tech giant was working on a more affordable version of the handset.
Now, in a blog post on Medium, known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests the company may have scrapped plans for the affordable Vision Pro, but did not give any reason why the tech giant might do so.
Kuo also says that “based on some component suppliers’ maximum production capacity estimates, Vision Pro shipments in 2024 will be at most 400,000–600,000 units, which is less than the market expectation of more than 1 million units.”
This means unless Apple significantly cuts down the cost of the Vision Pro, the shipment growth which is expected to grow in 2025 may not happen. He also suggested that Apple might start mass production of Vision Pro 2 sometime in the first half of 2027, meaning we might not see any hardware upgrades in the near future.
However, both Bloomberg and The Information have previously said that a cheaper Apple Vision Pro is under development. Rumour mill also has it that the budget-friendly MR headset may have a similar price tag of that of an iPhone, but given increasing prices of electronics, it will be interesting to see how the tech giant brings down the cost of components.
With a price tag of $3,499, analysts say the tech giant’s upcoming product may be out of reach for most buyers. A lite version of the Vision Pro makes sense since it will allow the company to reach a new set of users and take on Meta’s domination in the segment.
