Tinder, one of the most popular dating platforms on the planet, recently added an extra layer to its photo verification process that gives users a blue checkmark like Twitter. In a recent blog post, the company announced that the ‘Photo Verification’ process now requires users to upload selfie videos.

Until now, Tinder required users to take photos of themselves in different poses which would then be compared to the member’s other pictures. If you have never used Tinder or are coming back to the platform after a long break, the photo verification tool is a safety feature that ensures the person you are matched with is indeed who they claim to be.

Verified Tinder users will soon be able to choose if they want to receive messages from other verified members and ask their matches to complete the verification process before they send a message. Tinder also said that all members on the platform including existing verified users will have to use the updated photo verification that includes selfie videos in the coming months.

According to Tinder, the new selfie video verification process will require users to complete a series of video prompts, after which an AI will verify if the person in the video is indeed who they are claiming to be by matching a 3D mapping of the user’s facial geometry to their photo.

Tinder’s recent move comes at a time when it is increasingly becoming easy for scammers to use AI tools to generate photos and videos of people to create fake profiles. The company says the new photo verification process will start rolling out to all users in the coming days.
