Qualcomm has confirmed that its annual launch event, the Snapdragon Summit, for 2024, will take place from October 21 to 23 in Maui, Hawaii. During the event, the company is expected to unveil the next-gen 8-series mobile platform, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. According to an official social media post, the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will enable the “next generation of mobile gaming” and is likely to be the most capable Android smartphone chip to date.
Qualcomm has also confirmed that the next-generation Snapdragon 8 series chip will introduce its custom Oryon CPU architecture to mobile devices. This architecture is the same as that featured on the Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus processors for ARM-based Copilot+ branded Windows PCs.
Conventionally, Qualcomm designed its mobile CPUs using ARM Cortex core designs. However, with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, the company will utilise its in-house CPU design, offering greater flexibility and freedom to fine-tune the CPU as needed.
The Oryon CPU cores are a result of Qualcomm’s acquisition of Nuvia, a chip design company that includes veterans from the teams that designed chips for Apple and Google.
According to early benchmark leaks, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be a performance powerhouse. The leaked AnTuTu benchmark shows the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 posting over 3 million points, making it nearly 30 per cent more powerful than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is also said to offer exceptional single-core and multi-core CPU performance with clock speeds up to 4.2 GHz and is likely to be fabricated using TSMC’s 3nm manufacturing process.
Another leak on X by @negativeonehero suggests that the GPU on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is as powerful as the one on the MediaTek Dimensity 9300, but at just half its power budget.
Besides these enhancements, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is speculated to include a next-generation neural processing unit (NPU) to enable on-device AI experiences and is said to use the latest memory technology, such as LPDDR6, for added power efficiency.
The upcoming Xiaomi 15 could be the first phone to debut with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip, followed by devices like the iQOO 13, OnePlus 13, Galaxy S25 series, and more. Overall, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is expected to be more powerful and power-efficient than the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip.
Qualcomm is expected to introduce a new chip for affordable 5G smartphones in a launch event on July 30 in India. This chip is likely to significantly reduce the price of entry-level smartphones. At the same event, Qualcomm will also showcase the latest Snapdragon X series-powered, Copilot+ branded Windows PCs.
