Oppo caught cheating on benchmark scores with Find X and F7: Report

Oppo Find X and Oppo F7 showed more than 40 per cent improvement in 3DMark performance, as the phones were able to detect the benchmark app by name.

Oppo has been caught cheating on the benchmark scores with its flagship Oppo Find X as well the F7 smartphone. Both phones performed up to 50 per cent better on the public 3DMark app than its private version, said UL Benchmarks, the makers of the app. Both phones have been delisted from the benchmark soon after the analysis of the scores came to light.

The discrepancies in Oppo Find X and Oppo F7 came to light, as technology website Tech2 requested UL Benchmarks to cross-check the performance of both devices. In its detailed report about the same, UL Benchmarks found that both devices were able to offer almost 41 per cent better performance through the 3DMark app’s public version, than that of its private counterpart.

A statement from UL Benchmarks says that the phones “are able to detect the 3DMark app by name, rather than adapting to the kind of work within the test.” These misleading scores led to Oppo Find X being ranked fourth among smartphones for the results shown in the 3DMark Sling Shot Extreme performance test.

In response, Oppo also acknowledged that it had altered the performance capabilities of both phones, in order to achieve the highest possible score. The Chinese smartphone maker commented on the UL Benchmarks report, and said, “When we detect that users are running apps that demand high performance, such as games and 3DMark Benchmark, we allow the SoC to run at full speed for the smoothest experience.”

In addition, it also revealed that the phone would shift to power optimisation mode for such apps, during testing. If no user interaction had been detected for a few minutes soon after accessing 5-10 sections on the device, the chipset would maintain system performance between 70 and 80 per cent.

This follows the recent delisting of Huawei P20 Pro, Huawei Nova 3 and Honor Play, which were also spotted cheating benchmark apps with misleading scores. While the company did respond to the issue, it has also introduced ‘Performance Mode’ under EMUI 9.0, and given public access to the phone’s performance settings.
