Micromax reboots self with new logo; Launches flagship Canvas 6 series

Micromax on Wednesday announced that it will launch 19 new devices, including LED TVs and tablets, in India this month.

Seeking to reboot its image, Micromax on Wednesday announced that it will launch 19 new devices, including LED TVs and tablets, in India this month. It also announced a new flagship smartphone series called Canvas 6, which will be priced at Rs 13,999 and will come in two SKUs — Canvas 6 with 3GB RAM and all metal body, and a Canvas 6 Pro with 4GB RAM.

However, for Micromax the big announcement was its brand rejig, which includes a new logo and it’s ‘Around’ integrated service, which will be available on all new smartphones. The company, which wants to be in the top five global handset manufacturers by 2020, says it sees itself as an Internet company and wants to connect 100 million Micromax devices by 2017.

The Indian-handset manufacturer will also launch its own e-commerce store for its devices, and says it wants to ensure 100 per cent local manufacturing for its smartphones as part of its commitment to the Make in India initiative.

Micromax says it is looking at adding three more plants in Telangana, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan with an investment of Rs 300 crore as well as creating job opportunities for over 10,000 people by 2017.

Micromax’s new product portfolio includes 15 smartphones, three LED TVs in 50, 40 and 32-inch size respectively and two new 4G calling tablets. In terms of specs, the flagship Canvas 6 and Canvas 6 Pro have a 5.5-inch full HD display, are powered by MediaTek Helio X10 Tru-octa processors, and come with a 13 megapixel rear camera. The front camera on the Canvas 6 is eight megapixel, while the Canvas 6 Pro has a lower five megapixel front camera.

Additionally Canvas 6 comes with an all metal unibody design smartphone (the first such phone from Micromax) and has 3GB RAM and 32GB space, while Canvas 6 Pro comes with 4GB RAM and 16GB storage space and is made of plastic. Canvas 6 also has a fingerprint scanner on the back, which is not present in the Pro version. Both phones come with a 3000 mAh battery.

Micromax’s ‘Around’ service will let users order a cab from Ola or food from Zomato or check up flight bookings on Ixigo without going to each app separately. The service will be a part of all the latest Micromax phones, and was previously seen in its subsidiary Yu Televentures’ Yutopia smartphone. It was called Around YU then, but has now been renamed.

“We are committed to make Micromax as a clear leader in smart devices in the coming year. Therefore, we would be looking at further consolidation into newer product categories (LED TV and tablets) to bring in newer set of consumers into the Micromax brand and transform into a complete consumer electronics company. One of our key focus areas in this journey will be to 100% make in India,” said Vikas Jain, Micromax co-founder at the event.

We would also continue to invest in different service categories which interest our consumers to create a strong ecosystem within our brand for the most compelling and seamless experience,” said Rahul Sharma, co-founder of Micromax.
