It is the era of mobile gaming, and the recent resurgence of the Nintendo Switch has encouraged various technology companies to explore the thriving handheld console market. Although Nintendo is not officially available in India, the influx of affordable smartphones and internet penetration has enabled more Indians to turn to mobile gaming.
Adding to the growing list of companies offering consoles, Asus announced its first handheld gaming console recently. The company is bringing it to India, albeit in limited quantity. Unlike most handheld gaming devices, Asus’s offering is unique. It is the first Windows-based handheld device to officially launch in India. Priced at Rs 69,990, the ROG Ally targets the serious PC gaming community in India that seeks a powerful yet portable gaming device.
The ROG Ally will be available for sale in India starting July 12. If you are considering owning one, but not fully convinced, here is an explainer that highlights some of the notable features of the Asus ROG Ally.
The ROG Ally is one of the few handheld gaming consoles that includes a 1920x1080p FHD resolution display with support for touch input. The screen on the Ally offers up to 500 nits of peak brightness, which is more than what most gaming laptops offer and it also supports AMD FreeSync premium technology that eliminates shutters or screen tearing while gaming.
Asus has launched the top-of-the-line variant of the ROG Ally in India. Powered by the AMD Z1 Extreme system-on-chip, the console has an eight-core CPU paired with a Radeon Vega GPU with 4 GB of video memory. Fabbed using a 4nm process, the Z1 extreme blends between performance and efficiency.
The ROG Ally offers 16 GB DDR5 RAM, consisting of two 8GB sticks with 6400MT/s speed with support for dual channel memory. The device offers 512 GB of NVMe Gen 4-based SSD with an external UHS-II micro SD card slot for additional storage expansion.
ROG Ally with external GPU support via the ROG XG mobile interface makes it a truly unique handheld gaming console when compared to its contemporaries. Users can plug in an external GPU to enjoy up to 4K resolution gaming on an external monitor. Note that the external GPU has to be bought separately.
The ROG Ally has two joysticks, a D-Pad, two triggers, a couple of macro keys and it even offers haptic feedback to elevate the gaming experience. It also has Bluetooth connectivity, which allows users to add wireless controllers, a mouse, and a keyboard for a hand-free gaming experience.
Asus ROG Ally runs on 64-bit Windows 11 OS. Users can pair it to an external monitor with a mouse and keyboard and can use this device like a full-fledged PC. It also has a fingerprint sensor with support for Windows Hello.
Asus ROG Ally ships with Armoury Crate SE, a custom software that helps users to further customise and control the gaming console. Using this tool, users can reprogram the controllers, tweak fan settings, and can configure various gaming profiles.
The Asus ROG Ally gaming console is equipped with a true stereo speaker setup with dual 1W speakers with support for a smart amp and Dolby Atmos technology. The device also has a 3.5mm headphone jack, allowing users to plug in a wired headset.
Unlike smartphones, which depend on passing cooling solutions, the ROG Ally is fitted with two fans and a heat pipe network for enhanced cooling performance and to ensure minimal thermal throttling. It is also equipped with a 40Whr battery that claims to deliver 4 hours of battery life on the go.
Is it even a gaming console without any RGB lighting? The ROG Ally has circular RGB lighting around the two thumbsticks, which can be programmed via the Aura Sync app.
