Samsung Gear S3 and Gear S3 Classic are now officially out. Samsung announced the new smartwatches at Berlin ahead of IFA 2016, and the Gear S3 sticks with the round design we saw in the earlier Gear S2. It comes with IP68 water resistance, mobile payments, LTE connectivity, and built-in speaker and GPS.

Samsung has launched the Gear S3 in two versions: The Gear S3 Classic has a more minimalist design, while the Gear S3 frontier has a more rugged outdoor look with brighter bands, and a bigger watch face.

“Samsung Gear S2 achieved meaningful progress in the smartwatch category with a personalized watch face and a versatile rotating bezel that provided an intuitive smartwatch experience. Now with the new Gear S3, we expand our Gear collection and introduce not only a great smartwatch, but a great watch. With smart capabilities and sophisticated, elegant design, the Gear S3 marks a significant addition to our smartwatch portfolio,” said Younghee Lee, Executive Vice President of Global Marketing and Wearable Business, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics in a press statement.

The Gear S3 has the same circular bezel as the Gear S2, which can be used to control the watch. However Samsung says it has given this one a more classic look and the Gear S3 is compatible with 22mm watch bands.

Specifications of the new Gear S3 Classic and Frontier are: 1.3-inch Circular Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels (278ppi), full colour Always On Display, Corning Gorilla Glass SR+, and 22mm watch face. The Gear S3 series has 4GB Internal memory, 768MB RAM and a 380 mAh battery along with wireless charging support as well IP68 water and dust resistance.

The difference between the Gear S3 Frontier and Classic is that the former has a 3G/LTE and is slightly heavier at 62gms compared to the Classic which weighs 57g. Both watches support Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi b/g/n, NFC, MST, and GPS.

Samsung says the Always On Display shows the time rather than automatically fading to black. The rotating bezel gets new features including the ability to accept or reject call. Samsung Gear S3 users will also be able to write on the display and these messages will automatically convert to text.

The LTE connection option is only the Gear S3 frontier and Samsung claims in the new watch the battery lasts four days on a single charge. The Gear S3 supports Samsung Pay in select markets as the watch has Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) and Near Field Communication (NFC). The new Gear S3 series runs on the Tizen Wearable Platform 2.3.2

Samsung has not confirmed the pricing for the Gear S3, nor announced a specific date when the watches will be available.
