OpenAI, the Sam Altman-led company that brought us the popular ChatGPT has added several new features to the app and the web version since its inception back in 2022. Earlier this year, the company introduced ‘Memory’, a feature that enabled the AI-powered chatbot to store the “things you discuss across all chats.” While the functionality is quite useful, it did not allow users to search through their past conversations.

In a recent blog post, OpenAI says that ChatGPT users on the web will now have the “ability to search through your chat history quickly and efficiently” using the newly introduced chat history feature.

How to search past ChatGPT conversations?

To search past conversations, all you need to do is open ChatGPT in your favourite web browser, and from the left sidebar, click on the ‘Search magnifying glass’. Alternatively, you can also use the ‘Ctrl+K’ or ‘cmd+k’ shortcut on Windows and Mac.

Once done, type in the keywords or the phrase you want to remember from your past conversations and ChatGPT will try to find the best match. OpenAI says that, for now, only exact matches are supported, meaning you will have to be specific with keywords. From the search results, click on the conversation you want to open and you will be able to read or continue where you left off.

One thing to note is that even if you archive any conversations, they are still searchable despite not being visible in the sidebar. In case you delete a chat, it will also be removed from the chat history.

OpenAI says the search chat history feature is currently rolling out to Plus and Team members, while Enterprise and Edu users will get it within a week. And for those wondering, the functionality will be available for free users sometime next month.
