Jake Paul, the YouTuber-turned boxer, tried to rile up former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world Mike Tyson by wearing a diamond-studded ear guard during their pre-bout press conference in Texas. The ear guard was a reminder of Tyson’s infamous biting of Evander Holyfield’s ear during a bout at Nevada in 1997.
Tyson and Paul will fight at the AT&T Stadium in Texas on Friday night (Saturday morning IST).
“I’m not getting my s**t bitten off Friday night,” Paul said. “I got my diamond-spiked ear covers.”
According to TMZ.com the ear cover costs $100,000.
After he bit Holyfield, Tyson was disqualified from that bout and then suspended for 15 months.
In comments to select reporters before training Tyson warned Paul that he better be fully prepared or else the night could end badly for him.
“My own mother should be very careful if she has to get in the ring with me. When it’s over, it’s over. But while the process is going on, my intention is to hurt him. I hope he has the same intentions, or he is in trouble,” Tyson was quoted as saying by ESPN.
At the press conference later Tyson snapped back when he was asked if he had it in him at the age of 58 to beat the 27-year-old Paul.
“I am not going to lose, did you hear what I said?” he shouted.
