India’s highest medal count, drop on standings and most track para medals: Highlights of 2025 World Para Athletics Championships

India para athletes recorded 30 personal bests in the edition, while Sumit Antil, Shailesh Kumar and Rinku Hooda notched championship records

While India slipped down to 10th in the medals table of the athletics Para world championships, this was the best in terms of medal haul with 22 medals secured.

Here are the highlights of the event for the host contingent:

Best ever medal haul

Hosts India finished tenth in the medals tally of the World Para Athletics Championships with a total of 22 medals (six gold, nine silver, and seven bronze) that concluded on Sunday.

However despite four medals on the last day, this was not the best finish in terms of the position in the medal tally. India’s best finish came at the last edition at the sixth place with 17 medals in total at Kobe.

Last day race

At the end of the penultimate day, India was tied at joint fifth with Colombia, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland and Thailand with the countries having six gold each.

However, in a race to enter the top five on the tally, Iran won three gold medals and finished at third place.

Netherlands and Poland won two and three golds respectively to enter the top five while Colombia, Great Britain, and Italy won one gold medal each to push India to the tenth spot

Three championship records by Indians

India set three championships records at the event. Two-time Paralympic champion Sumit Antil threw the Javelin 71.37m in the F64 Category to set the Championship record.

India’s first gold medallist of the event, Shailesh Kumar jumped 1.91m in the men’s high jump T42 event to set a new event mark.

First time world champion Rinku Hooda recorded 66.37m in the men’s Javelin F46 event to set the championship record.

India para athletes also recorded 30 personal bests in the edition.

Most track medals

This is the most track medals India has won at the World Para Athletics Championships.

India won six track medals in New Delhi as compared to four at the previous edition in Kobe.

Simran Sharma did a double in the women’s 100m and 200m T12 category with gold in 100m and silver in 200m.

Preethi Pal did her double in 100m and 200m T35 categories with bronze in 100m and silver in 100m.

Sandeep Kumar became the first ever male Indian para athlete to win a track medal at the World Championships with a bronze in the men’s 200m T35 event.
