Yograj Singh on Yuvraj Singh’s condition during 2011 ODI World Cup: ‘I wanted him to play even when he was spitting blood’

Yuvraj Singh’s father, Yograj Singh, recalled a discussion with his son while Yuvraj was struggling with his health during the 2011 ODI World Cup.

“For our country, if Yuvraj Singh had died from cancer and had won India the World Cup, I would have been a proud father. I still am very proud of him,” Yograj said on “Unfiltered by Samdish.”

“I have told him this over the phone as well.

“I wanted him to play even when he was spitting blood. I told him, ‘Don’t worry, you won’t die. Win this World Cup for India.'”

Yograj revealed what he tells the parents who bring their kids to him for training. He said, “I tell them to give me in writing that if their son dies while training, it’s not on my hand.”

However, Yograj, who played one Test and six ODIs for India, still feels that Yuvraj Singh, a two-time World Cup winner, failed to reach his true potential.

“Yuvraj Singh, if he had worked even 10 percent like his father, he would have become a great cricketer,” he said.

The 66-year-old still said how he wants to play only cricket and shatter all the records if he got another chance in the next life.

“I want one more life. I want to play cricket. I want to bat like Viv Richards and I want to become a fast bowler like Michael Holding,” he said.

Yograj said that in India, he only considers Kapil Dev as one of the greats, despite falling out with his childhood friend.

“In India, Kapil Dev was like the only cricketer. Right from childhood to today, I adore him as a very, very great cricketer,” he said.

Yograj also revealed his discussion with West Indies great Viv Richards.

“Viv Richards told me, ‘People call me arrogant, but in my mind, I always feel that I am the best.'”
