Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh Highlights, T20 World Cup 2024: BAN edge SL as bowlers shine in Dallas

We started really well in the first 10 overs but in the middle overs we batted badly. Bowling is our strength. If we had got 150-160 we could have won with our bowling attack. The batters let us down in both games. We still have two games and we will try to do our best. Maheesh and myself are the two main spinners and we have to attack.

I tried my best and stuck to my strengths. I was trying to keep it normal for the hat-trick delivery and was keen on executing a good ball.

There were no on-field controversies this time but a clean, nervy game. Bangladesh's clinical bowling forced them back into the game after a rocky start. Sri Lanka were pushed hard to a corner before the bowlers forced a bit of excitement in the middle of a 124-run defense. But in the end, the lack of runs from the Lankan batting order has cost Hasaranga and his men. They have lost two out of two and are already on the brink of a group-stage exit. Meanwhile, the Tigers are up and running with their first-ever win over Sri Lanka in the T20 World Cup.

11 runs required from 12 balls for BAN. SL need two wickets. Nerves must be jangling in both camps.

Dasun Shanaka is into the attack. Full toss and Mahmudullah pumps it over mid-wicket for SIX! First ball of the innings from Shanaka and that is taken to the cleaners. A single to follow. Mahmudullah is content with just the one run. DOT. Shanaka hits length but the ball keeps low as it trickles past Tanzim's bat. A single to follow. Slower bouncer outside off and Mahmudullah leaves it expecting a wide. Loud appeal from the keeper as Shanaka sends in another bouncer past Mahmudullah's hanging blade. SL review but it is given a wide! Bangladesh need 2 off 7 balls now.

Slower-ball on length and Mahmudullah drills it to mid-off for a quick single. The throw is off the stumps at the non-striker's and the batters go for the second. That's it, Bangladesh pip Sri Lanka by two wickets in a Dallas thriller!

14 needed off 18. Thushara is back.

He pins Mahmudullah with his first delivery. Slower delivery on length and Mahmudullah drags it to mid-wicket for a single. Quick bumper but a tad too from Thushara and the umpire signals a wide. Thushara to Rishad, OUT! Bowled him! Thushara disrupts Rishad with a slower ball and it trickles through to hit the off-stump. Sri Lanka continue to hold on in this defense. Thushara to Taskin, LOUD APPEAL. Thushara slings in a yorker to the toe. He appeals for a wicket but the umpire is unmoved. SL review.  THREE REDS and Thushara has two in two! He sends in a wide to Tanzim Sakib off the wide delivery. A dot ball to follow as he pins it outside off-stump. What a finish this is turning it out to be.

Mahmudullah drives Pathirana to long-on for a single. Pathirana to Shakib, OUT! A ripper from Theekshana at third! Firm bumper and Shakib attempts to upper-cut it to the fence. Theekshana runs in from the boundary and holds onto a dipping Kookaburra. Top stuff there as Rishad walks in at 8. He nearly chips his first delivery to mid-off. A couple of singles to follow.

Hasaranga to Litton, OUT! He slides the ball in sharply to the pads and has Litton in front. A long deliberation before Bangladesh review. That seems to be plumb in front as Litton misses the line of the ball as he prods forward to defend. Mahmudullah is in at 7. He is off the blocks with a single. Close! Hasaranga nearly hits timber with a deft slide as Shakib attempts an expansive drive through cover.

Shakib and Litton keep themselves busy at the crease with singles. Theekshana is not offering much room as the batters nudge throught the gaps. Four from the over.

Pathirana strays to the pad and Shakib flicks it behind square for a single. Short ball outside the off-stump and Litton slaps it over cover for two runs. Pathirana sews up the rest of the over with three dots.

Hasaranga goes full and Hridoy slog-sweeps over wide long-on for SIX! SIX more as Hridoy swats the ball over mid-wicket for a cracking maximum. Stunner from Hridoy! Hasaranga wafts one outside the off-stump and Hridoy clears his front leg and smashes the ball over cover for SIX! Hasaranga hits the pad as Hridoy misses a sweep and reviews instantly. Three reds, OUT! Hridoy has to depart but what a counter this has been from the youngster.

Litton and Hridoy tread on harmless singles. Quick bumper and Litton unleashes a cracking swivel-pull for SIX over deep mid-wicket!

Theekshana cramps up Litton for dots before conceding back-to-back wides. Full toss and Litton taps it through square for two runs after Nissanka intercepts in the deep. A single to follow.

Hasaranga continues to offer easy singles by sliding down to the pads. There comes out the googly that dips and turns sharply to hit Litton high on the pads. In the slot and Litton unleashes the slog-sweep for SIX over mid-wicket!

Matheesha Pathirana replaces Thushara

Pathirana starts with a huge wide outside off. He returns with a cracking delivery that nearly pins Hridoy leg-before. The ball keeps a tad low but Hridoy gets his blade down in time to fend it off from the pads. Pathirana slings one in and Hridoy clips it elegantly through mid-wicket for three runs. Full-toss and Litton taps it to mid-off for a single. Another wide from Pathirana. Pathirana overpitches this time and Hridoy digs it out past the non-striker for FOUR.

Wanindu Hasaranga into the attack

Hridoy clips one behind square for a single. Litton follows up with one run. Hasaranga strays to the pads and Hridoy works one through mid-wicket for another single. Three from the over.

Thushara to Shanto, OUT! Straight to cover. Check drive to cover from the fuller length and Asalanka latches onto a sharp catch. Shanto was attempting to charge from outside the crease but ends up gifting his wicket. Towhid Hridoy is in at 5. Thushara rushes him with another fiery dipping delivery. An inside-edge whizzes past the leg-stump for one run. Length from Thushara and Litton flays it to the cover boundary for FOUR with a crisp drive.

Theekshana attacks the stumps. Litton plays the ball late onto the on-side for a single. Bangladesh are keeping it light despite the early wickets. Top-edge from Litton off the sweep and it bisects short third and fine leg for FOUR.

Thushara swings one into the stumps. Shanto taps it down and sets off on a quick single. Litton clips behind square for one run. The batters weather the attack with a slew of singles.

Theekshana replaces de Silva

Beaten! Shanto is hurried by a slider that drifts past his outside-edge. Litton makes room and cuts a length ball behind point and reels in three runs. 

Nuwan Thushara into the attack

A slinging delivery outside off-stump and it flies out for a wide. Thushara shapes one in an as Tanzid attempts to make room and carve past point, no run. Thushara to Tanzid, OUT! A pearler from the slinga! He hurls it in full and beats the bat to hit off-stump. There's nothing Tanzid could have done to avert that. Najmul Shanto is in at 4.

A single first ball for Tanzid. Soumya attempts to sweep second ball and the ball thuds into the pads. Luckily, it is sliding down leg. de Silva to Soumya, OUT! Straight to mid-on! A nothing shot from Soumya as he attempts to work the ball across the line with a rash swipe. Sarkar falls for a duck. Litton Das is in at 3.

Tanzid Tamim and Soumya Sarkar walk out for the chase as Sri Lanka take the field. This could be a tight chase if the bowlers fire up early for the islanders.

Slower ball on length from Tanzim and Mathews belts it over the deep mid-wicket fielder for FOUR. Cracking yorker from Tanzim and Mathews digs it out to short third. Fumble there from the fielder and Mathews reels in two runs. Another yorker and Mathews drives it down to long-off, no run taken. Mathews sets up for big swing and misses out on a full toss! Tanzim to Mathews, OUT! Short third holds onto it this time. Slower-ball on length and Mathews mistimes the slog altogether and sends the ball straight to the fielder. A single to finish and Sri Lanka end up on 124.

Mustafizur to bowl out. Mathews finds a single, putting Theekshana on strike. Mustafizur beats the outside-edge as he sprays one across the turf. Mustafizur to Theekshana, OUT! Another one down. Theekshana swings hard across the line to the cutter and the thick outside-edge lobs up straight to deep third.

Taskin attacks the stumps again and Shanaka drags it to mid-on for a single. Mathews comes down the track as Taskin sends in a firm bumper, called wide by the umpire. Change of pace from Taskin and Shanaka plays around it. Taskin to Shanaka, OUT! Edged and taken. The pressure forces a rash flail and Shanaka gets an outside-edge to the keeper.

Is that another? Rishad finds some turn and drift to send de Silva's slog-sweep across the ball. Litton Das flicks the bails in a flash and it's OUT! Excellent work all around as Sri Lanka lose their sixth! Dasun Shanaka is in at 8. He dabs one behind point for a single to get off the blocks. Rishad finds late turn again from middle-stump and Mathews somehow keeps it off the stumps.

Mathews and de Silva put pressure on the fielders with a slew of ones and twos. Tanzim continues to attack the stumps but the batters find runs consistently. Six from the over.

Rishad to Asalanka, OUT! Slog-sweep to the far end does not find the fence. Asalanka drags a length ball to deep square leg and Shakib holds onto a tricky catch. Rishad to Hasaranga, OUT! Two in two for Rishad! Hasaranga attempts to make room but Rishad slides it in quickly to find an outside-edge to first slip. Angelo Mathews plays out the hat-trick ball. Mustafizur pins the ball to the stumps and Asalanka dabs it quickly through cover for a single. Mustafizur finds an inside-edge from de Silva that nearly clips the off-stump. Mustafizur is up on pace, attacking the stumps. Asalanka and de Silva nudge on either side of the wicket for singles. Loud appeal as Fizz skids one through to Asalanka's pads. The umpire is unmoved and Bangladesh decide against a review.

Shakib is back. He is much slower through the air this time and the batters resort for singles. de Silva gives a charge and gets an inside-edge past the edge for two runs - the first of the match.

Taskin returns with a sharp delivery that rushes past Asalanka's outside-edge. Similar line but Asalanka dabs it down to third for a single this time. Taskin tails it in from length and nearly hits the off-stump as de Silva aims to slide it behind point. de Silva taps one to point and sets off on a quick single. Asalanka pushes a fuller ball to cover and is immediately sent back. Direct-hit but Asalanka dives to make ground and the ball deflects from the stumps for FOUR overthrows!

Rishad returns

Sharp turn for Rishad from outside the off-stump and Asalanka nearly drags it back to the stumps. Fuller delivery and Asalanka lifts it through cover for a single. Rishad wafts one in on length and de Silva pumps it down the ground for another single. In the slot and Asalanka smites it over long-on for SIX!

Mahmudullah into the attack

Loopy drifter into the pads and Asalanka plays around it. A bit of a stifled appeal from Bangladesh as the ball slides down leg. Four runs from the over as Bangladesh tighten things up.

Mustafizur fiddles through his variations as the batters rotate strike with singles. Short ball from Mustafizur and Nissanka hammers it through mid-wicket for FOUR. Mustafizur to Nissanka, OUT! Change of pace and gone! The off-cutter induces the miscued shot from Nissanka and he balloons one straight to cover.

Rishad into the attack

A quick slider and Nissanka gets a thick outside-edge past short-third for FOUR. Rishad flights one into the blockhole and de Silva digs it out. A wafter follows and Rishad beats de Silva with a genuine leg-break. A single to follow.

Taskin returns. Tight lines from the bowler and the batters tread on a string of quick singles. Taskin offers no room and forces Nissanka to play straight. Only four from the over.

Mustafizur Rahman into the attack

Mustafizur to Kamindu, OUT! He strikes first ball. An off-cutter from Fizz first-up and Kamindu toes it towards mid-off. Simple catch there for the fielder and that's a crucial breakthrough for Bangladesh. Dhananjaya de Silva is in at 4. Mustafizur overpitches outside off and de Silva creams it past point for FOUR.

Tanzim returns

A brute of a short ball rushes Nissanka, nearly hitting him on the grill. Excellent riposte as Tanzim feeds length and Nissanka pumps it down the ground for a straight SIX! Tanzim returns with a barrage of skiddy bouncers before Nissanka finds a single.

Short delivery and Mendis swats it through mid-wicket for FOUR. Width outside the off-stump and Mendis slashes the ball third for FOUR. Taskin to Kusal, OUT! Dragged on! Taskin skids one through length and Kusal is caught in the crease as he finds an inside-edge towards the stumps. Kamindu Mendis is in at 3. Taskin shapes away from the left-hander and Kamindu slaps the ball past point for FOUR.

Waqar Younis and Natalie Germanos analyse: "It is the third game being played on this pitch. There is one shorter side at 61 meters, 70 on the other and 73 straight down. This pitch has plenty of bounce. This is fantastic and has played really well. It has been watered nicely. There is an even covering of grass and I don't see much of spin."

Wanindu Hasaranga: We don't mind batting first. We are going with two genuine fast bowlers and two genuine spinners, two seam bowling all rounders. It depends on the match situation on where I come out to bat.

Najmul Shanto: We would like to bowl first as we expect some seam and swing early on. Very important especially in this format, the top four have been doing a lot of hard work in the last few days. It looks a bit dry.

Sri Lanka will hope to put the battering against South Africa in their last match behind them when they take on Bangladesh who will be playing their first match in the T20 World Cup on Saturday.

The two teams have developed the second-most fiercest rivalry in Asia after India vs Pakistan with the match also termed as Naagin derby due to the Naagin dance celebration both teams have done against each other in the past. Sri Lanka, who are already on the backfoot after scoring their lowest T20 score ever with 77 against the Proteas, will look to avoid any more slip ups if they want to progress to the Super 8s.

Bangladesh, meanwhile, are coming into this World Cup following a rotten run of form where they lost a series against USA, becoming the first full member nation to do so. They also lost the warm-up match to India in a comprehensive fashion and will be hoping to avoid any more goof-ups in their opening match against a wounded Sri Lanka.
