IPL 2025: Sunrisers Hyderabad to bat first after Mumbai Indians win toss

The players of Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians will wear black armbands during their IPL match which will not feature cheerleaders and fireworks here on Wednesday to mourn the victims of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam that caused 26 deaths.

The teams will also observe a minute's silence to pay their respects to those affected by the incident that has drawn international condemnation.

"The players of two teams will wear black armbands and observe a minute's silence in memory of all those who lost their lives in the terrorist attack in Kashmir's Pahalgam," a BCCI source told PTI.

"As a mark of respect there would be no cheerleaders on the sidelines of MI vs SRH game. No crackers will be burst," he added.

Terrorists opened fire on civilians at the popular tourist location in south Kashmir on Tuesday, killing at least 26 persons and injuring several others.

The Resistance Front (TRF), which is a part of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror group, claimed responsibility for the attack. The attack has drawn strong condemnation from across the world.

Ahead of the IPL 2025 clash against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene heaped praise on former MI captain and team veteran Rohit Sharma. After a forgettable IPL 2025, Rohit smashed a match-winning 45-ball 76 on Sunday against Chennai Super Kings to help Mumbai win.

"He's been playing at this tempo for a while and that's something that he understands himself. But at the same time, he will understand the game better in situational awareness as well,” Jayawardene said. "Like today, when Ashwin came as well, he took a little bit of time. He knew that he didn't have to take the long boundary straight away.” 

“But those are experienced players making those good decisions out there. He'll still play with that tempo and we've encouraged him to do that because he's a damn good player, we want him to take control of that. He has got a couple of other guys who are going to follow him, who will bat around him as well take that little bit of onus away from certain situations,” Jayawardene added.

For Mumbai Indians, captain Rohit Sharma's runs with the blade have been a constant talking point. But for Mumbai Indians, it's not a concern, said Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene said.

“Once he comes off like that, you know that he's going to change the game and the momentum and that's going to filter down to the rest of the boys as well, so pretty happy with the approach,” Mumbai's Jayawardene told the media in the post-match press conference.

“He never changed his approach. The intent was there from day one, even though he was failing, so that was good for us that he was trying to play for the team and how he wanted to do it. We just backed him to do that,” he added.

Accuweather predicts that temperature will rise to a maximum of 39 degrees during the day, whereas mercury will drop to 36 at the time of the toss and will go down to 32 as the game progresses. Dew is likely to play a significant role in the second innings.

The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad, has favored both batting and bowling line-ups this season. With teams scoring scores close to and in excess of 200 in the ground, it is more likely that the side winning the toss will opt to bowl first. Hyderabad themselves have chased down a massive target of 245 in just 18.3 overs while playing againts Punjab Kings in the stadium.

At the start of this IPL season, South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada echoed a key concern voiced by many about the lack of balance between bat and ball in T20 cricket. With teams pushing to cross the 300-run mark, he said that if the trend continued, the game should be called “batting” not “cricket”.

Mumbai Indians beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by four wickets in their home game at Wankhede. Mumbai chased down 163 in 18.1 overs after SRH managed only 162/5 batting first.  

There is something wrong with Nitish Kumar Reddy in this IPL. After seven matches, he has scored 131 runs at an average of 21.83 and a painful strike rate of 113.91 and is yet to score a half-century. There were a few sparks in the season early on, but as the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s batting collectively started to struggle, his batting too started to fade away.

While trying to stabilise the innings after early wickets, this season, he has often gone into his shell. The innings against the Mumbai Indians (19 off 21 balls) and the Gujarat Titans (31 off 34 balls) lacked the freedom of a usual Nitish innings, but he had the responsibility on his shoulders of taking SRH to a par total.
