MI vs RCB: Sixteen points are said to be the cut-off for playoff qualification, but as things stand, mathematically six teams can finish on 16 or more points.
Five teams are locked on 10 points each, and out of them, two Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are going to lock horns at the Wankhede on Tuesday. MI and Mumbai are not only have the same points after ten games, their net run rate are also very close.
Sixteen points is said to be the cut-off for playoff qualification, but as things stand, mathematically six teams can finish on 16 or more points.
Even if MI or RCB will win, they might get into that top four position but will have plenty of work to do, and have to win at least two of their remaining three games.
For the playoff race, MI might have an edge, considering they are playing three of their remaining four matches at Wankhede, while RCB only play one at Chinnaswamy. [Read More]

What a run chase by the Mumbai Indians! There are wins and there are performances like these. It is a proper hammering RCB took today there is no other way to put it. The Surya's innings today have to be the innings of the tournament it was brutal hitting. Nehal Wadhera at the other end too showed his class. He too smacked a timely half-century. RCB's bowling has been poor, to say the least. Saying Harshal Patel had an off-day would be kind to him. The win not only gives Mumbai Indians the confidence also a huge boost in Net Run Rate and they will jump above in the table now.
David trying to hit the first ball mistimes the delivery and gets caught. However, it wont make much of difference the game is almost done. What a run chase this has been from Mumbai Indians. After 16.2 over Mumbai Indians 192/4
It has to be the innings of the season. This has been T20 batting at its very best. Some of the shots he played were unreal. What an innings by a champion player. Most of the RCB fielders congratulated him after the knock and rightly so. After 15.4 over Mumbai Indians 192/3
Surya continues his imperious batting today. This has been a master class of a run chase by Mumbai Indians and the way Surya has batted it has to be one of the innings of the tournament. What a partnership this has turned out to be. RCB would be kicking themselves if they could have got to 240 but they did not. After 15.1 over Mumbai Indians 182/2
This is his fourth 50 in his last six games. The Mumbai batter looked in sublime touch today. He has played some of the most pleasing shots on the night. The boundary which he hit of Siraj behind the point for a boundary has to be one of the best boundaries in this tournament. After 14.1 over Mumbai Indians 160/2
The death bowling specialist gave away 17 runs in the over. Trying to bowl his dipping slower ball ended up bowling a no-ball which went for a boundary. This has been poor bowling from RCB so far. They haven't stuck to their lines and lengths and have been punished on this batting paradise. After 13.1 over Mumbai Indians 141/2
Hazelwood has been taken apart today. Initially, he was put to assault by Kishan and in the previous over it was Surya who took a liking to his pace and played his vintage shots behind the keeper. It looks like MI is slightly ahead in this game. After 12.2 over Mumbai Indians 115/2
Hasaranga who has bowled well so far gave away 15 runs letting the pressure off. This might not seem like it but it might be a massive over in the context of the game. As it could have been the over where MI could have lost one of those set batters, however, it is MI who won the battle. After 11.1 over Mumbai Indians 115/2
In the last few overs, RCB has pulled back things nicely. MI seems to have difficulties in finding the boundaries. Either of the batters have to break the shackles as there seems to be tension building around in the stadium. After 10.3 over Mumbai Indians 107/2
Hasaranga is looking in good rhythm today. He is tossing the ball up nicely and deceiving the batters. MI batters might look to see him out and take on other bowlers. The wicket seems to be a touch on the slower side it won't be a bad ploy for Faf to bring on Maxwell for a couple of overs. After 9.2 over Mumbai Indians 96/2
This has been a good spell for RCB as they are getting through a few quiet overs. Both Surya and Wadhera are taking time to get themselves in however, they cannot let this go on for too long as MI has the power to follow in the later overs. RCB needs to keeping chipping away with wickets. After 8.3 over Mumbai Indians 84/2
Sandip G: It has been largely his nonchalance with the bat that has stood out in the league, but Anuj Rawat has been throwing ample evidence of his skills behind the stumps. Sample A: The outside edge from Ishan Kishan flew off to Rawat. But it nestled comfortably into his claws. It did not rebound in his gloves, rather got sucked into. Often, as Dinesh Karthik is prone to, keepers tend to go grabbing the ball, but like a Venus flytrap folding up when the insect is in its range, he lets the ball bed into his gloves. The gather was so smooth that there was hardly any flourish. Exhibit B) Mohammed Siraj, in vengeful mood after getting hit by Kishan, pinged in a stray bouncer miles over Kishan’s head. But like a point-guard in basketball, he jumped high, smoothly and effortlessly, extending every single muscle of his, and nabbed the ball with his right hand (he is a leftie), denying four wides. An impressed Virat Kohli was quick to applaud him. As did Siraj, as Rawat flashed a warm smile. After 7 over Mumbai Indians 74/2
Sriram Veera: Rohit Sharma’s horror run and meme-run continues. More than the bowler Hazaranga, the captain Faf du Plessis seemed sure of the lbw that he went for the DRS. Hazaranga’s doubt wasn’t perhaps about the ball’s destination but whether Rohit had skipped down the track a long way to negate the lbw. As the replays showed, he hadn’t. What remained was if the ball straightened enough and not slid down leg side from the middle stump line. It had. And Hazaranga who had moved away from the team huddle, seemingly unsure about the wicket, was overjoyed at the verdict. Just a couple of balls earlier, he had removed Ishan Kishan with a lovely slider that had induced an edge off the cut shot. And boy did he scream in joy. Rohit dawdled outside his dugout for a while, seemingly unpleased with the verdict. Was the point of impact over 3m mark that negates the lbw appeals? Rohit certainly seemed to think so. After 5.4 over Mumbai Indians 59/2
The leg-spinner first picked up Kishan and then got Rohit Sharma. Much needed a breakthrough for RCB. MI needs to build a partnership here. Suryakumar Yadav and Nehal Wadhera in the middle for the hosts. After 5.1 over Mumbai Indians 52/2
Sriram Veera: The other day on a pitch that wasn’t completely flat, Mohammad Shami had exposed Ishan Kishan, repeatedly teasing the outside edge. On Tuesday, Kishan didn’t have any such worries on a batting beaut at Wankhede. He charged out to Mohammad Siraj for a six over long-on and pulled the bouncer next ball over backward square-leg. He also thumped Josh Hazlewood over mid-on and whipped him to square-leg boundary. But the fiercest hit came in the first ball of the fourth over from Hazlewood. It was an absolute smack: a length delivery that disappeared far beyond the midwicket boundary. Rohit Sharma nodded his head in respect and came over to pat him on the back. After 4 over Mumbai Indians 41/0
The pocket-size dynamite is looking in excellent touch again and he has provided the quick start that his side needed. This is top start for Mumbai Indians chasing a mamoth total. RCB needs to break this opening partnership immediately or it might get ugly for them. After 3.1 over Mumbai Indians 40/0
Rohit coming on the back of two ducks went down the track and smashed the bowler for a boundary. The momentum continued throughout the over. Ishan Kishan smashed Hazelwood for a couple of boundaries later in the over Kishan is looking in good touch here. After 2.1 over Mumbai Indians 26/0
Mohammed Siraj bowled a half-volley of the first delivery which Ishan Kishan drove nicely for a boundary. However, Siraj made a decent comeback in the remaining over by bowling tight lines and lengths. After 1 over Mumbai Indians 4/0
Spending time out there and having fun with Faf, it was enjoyable. I think it was around a 200-wicket, but there were a few balls that kept low. We are happy with that score. You try and play the conditions as much as you can. I was really committed today and super positive in my mindset. I tried to play the field and tried to back my instincts.
It has been deja vu for RCB, while Maxwell and du Plessis were batting at one stage it looked like they would get to the 240-mark however, as soon as they got out to rest of the batting order could not step-up once again. Dinesh Karthik unlike his previous outings stayed for a longer and got a few boundaries however, despite his efforts this seems like a below-par total for this surface. Rohit Sharma on the other hand would be happy with the way they have bowled in the death, unlike the previous games where they have gone for plenty. All in all abosrobing second half to follow stay with us for all the live updates.
Sriram Veera: Dinesh Karthik’s average season with the bat changed a bit but for one important detail: his weak pull shots continued. His pull shots off rank short balls haven’t cleared deep midwicket a few times already in this edition and Tuesday presented one more such occasion. Luckily, before his end, he was dropped on 14 and he walloped a few boundaries to make it his best outing. But then came that weak pull shot. Again, Chris Jordan’s delivery was pretty short but yet again DK couldn’t clear the boundary. He stormed back, cursing himself. After 18.5 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 189/6
Chris Jordan picked up Dinesh Karthik. Karthik trying to pull was caught near the boundary. However, the over still went for 18 runs. not a good outing for Jordan. He has been taken apart for a few runs on his debut for Mumbai Indians. After 18.5 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 189/6
Rohit's gamble to bowl Karthikeya did not pay off as he was taken for 17 runs by Karthik. This is a gem of an innings by Karthik when his side needed the most. Just when it looked like his side was losing momentum he came back and batted well and pulled back into the game. After 18 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 185/6
Jordan bowled his third over and has gone for a few runs again. Jadhav and Karthik are looking in good. This is what Jadhav has been brought to do and he is looking in good touch. Rohit has brought Karthikeya into the attack. This is a gamble by Rohit to use the spinner in the 18th over. After 17.1 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 174/5
Sriram Veera: The other day it was Rohit Sharma with an awful attempt at a lap shot. Then came Anuj Rawat’s lame lap in this game. Even Faf du Plessis wasn’t to be left behind with his attempt to bag the Razzie award for the lap shot. Down he went on his knee after shuffling to off in the 15th over, but the ball from Cameron Green hadn’t quite arrived yet. Too much committed into the shot to pull out, du Plessis went through in hope. The ball was well outside off and self-preservation took over as he jerked his head away to the on side and the ball popped off the tail end of the bat and though the substitute Vishnu Vinod juggled it for a while, he managed to hold on. Though, it has to be said that the Razzie for lap still belongs to Rohit Sharma, for that effort against CSK was so bad that it's destined for YouTube immortality. After 16 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 161/5
Cameron Green picks up du Plessis. The RCB skipper tried to scoop the ball and was caught at fine-leg inside the ring. Massive wicket for Mumbai Indians. RCB has made the substitution and brought in Kedhar Jadhav for Lamror who is in the middle to bat. After 15 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 152/5
Mahipal Lamror departs RCB have lost two wickets in quick succession. the left-hander tried to work the ball ont he leg-side however, got the inside edge onto stumps. It has been a brilliant over from Karthikeya he just gave away six runs. Dinesh Karthik has walked into the middle for RCB. After 14 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 146/4
Behrendorff provides the much-needed breakthrough. Maxwell could not pick the slower one and was caught on the boundary. Much needed breakthrough for Mumbai Indians as RCB were looking good for 240 the way they were going. After 13.1 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 142/3
This has been brilliant batting from both Faf and Maxwell they are taking this vulnerable Mumbai bowling apart. The way this batting line-up is going 240 runs looks like a possibility at this moment. After 11 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 120/2
Sandip G: Chris Jordan is captain’s dream. He expends every ounce of his energy on the field. He runs for his life when chasing even the most lost of lost causes of boundaries, effortlessly lunges on the field, he saved a gloriously struck drive off Glenn Maxwell to save a certain four. He has a bullet throw too from the deep. Then he steams in to have a crack at the batsman with the white-ball and that’s when he undoes all the good work on the field. He runs in with brisk intensity and purpose and then ends up bowling a pair of short balls at Glenn Maxwell, who fetches both into the upper tiers of the stadium. It’s his sixth season in the league, but with the fifth franchise, and that probably tells the story of his travails in the league. But quite why he still manages to spark bidding wars and brought for Rs 3 crores of excess (on three instances) is something of a mystery. He is a captain’s dreams, but not when he bowls. After 10 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 104/2
Brilliant counterpunch by the Aussie. He came in when his side was in a bit of trouble however, he took the bowling attack on and shifted the pressure back onto the Mumbai bowling. Rohit now is looking around for more options to use and he has brought in Akash Madhwal into the attack. After 9.3 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 101/2
Sandip G: Just as Jason Behrendorff was loading up, Rawat shuffled across and was progressively crouching so that he could scoop the strapping left-arm seamer. Behrendorff spotted his design and flung the ball wide outside the off-stump. Midway through the ball’s flight, Rawat realised the folly, but then he was left with few other alternatives but to change his shot. From a half-bent, unsteady position, he opened his bat face to steer him down the third man. Improvisation of an improvised shot gone awry. He found himself in an awkward position and played a strange, nothing shot. Neither a scoop nor a steer, he ended up tapping the ball over the slip cordon for Cameron Green to complete the catch. Such indiscretion seemed contagious as Faf du Plessis attempted a similar shot of Cameron Green and failed. Fortunately, Faf managed little connection on the ball. After 9 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 87/2
Sriram Veera: Virat Kohli has loved charging the pacers in this IPL. A move that has considerably upped his strike rate in the Powerplays this year. And so, he went down the track in the first over to Jason Behrendorff but it shaped out to be a slog. He wasn’t up to the pitch but that’s common with the pacers; in these scenarios he usually goes for the aerial on-the-up punch in the V but this time, he went for a swipe across the line and unsurprisingly edged behind. Somehow, both the umpire and Kohli missed the fat edge and a DRS was taken and Kohli threw his head back at the replay and briskly strode out. A ball before Faf du Plessis was dropped by Wadehra at midwicket and that brought Kohli on strike. Would Mumbai have preferred du Plessis’s wicket to Kohli’s given a choice? After 8.2 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 83/2
Chris Jordan has bowled his first over of the tournament and was hit for a couple of sixes by Glenn Maxwell. He gave away 16 runs in the first over of the tournament. Mumbai after starting well is slowly losing grip in this game as Faf and Maxwell are not only building a partnership but are also scoring at a brisk pace. After 7.1 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 73/2
Chawla has bowled the final over of the Powerplay and gave away 11 runs. It has been an interesting tactic by Rohit to bowl two overs of Chawla in the Powerplay. It has not bore fruits on the day. This is turning into a good partnership for RCB at the moment and they would be hoping to keep it going. After 6 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 56/2
Bowling his third over in a row Behrendorff has given away 16 runs. Despite losing early wickets this has turned into a decent start for RCB. They will be looking to keep going after the Powerplay as well. If these tow can get going on this surface MI might be looking at a massive total to chase down. After 5.1 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 53/2
Another productive over for RCB as du Plessis smashed Green for a couple of boundaries. Once again it is du Plessis who have to hold this innings together for RCB. Behrendorff has been top-class with his bowling today. Mumbai Indians would be hoping to keep the pressure going. After 4.1 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 30/2
Beherendorff picks up Virat Kohli and Anuj Rawat. The number three batter tried to play a scoop shot which he mistimed and was caught by Cameron Green behind the wicket. RCB have lost two wickets three overs into the game and are in a bit of a pickle here. Glenn Maxwell has walked into the middle. After 3 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 20/2
Leg-spinner Chawla has been brought into the attack in the second over of the innings. Faf struggled to play him a couple of deliveries however, came back storming back in the over hitting a couple of boundaries. Faf is looking in good touch again. After 2 over Royal Challengers Bangalore 16/1
Behrendorff picks up Virat Kohli in the first over. The Banglore opener trying to hit the ball across the line by going down the track gets the faintest of the edges and Ishan Kishan takes the catch. He was deemed not out on the field however, Rohit Sharma reviewed the decision and ultra edge showed a spike. Earlier in the over Nehal Wadhera dropped a simple catch of Faf du Plessis. After one over Royal Challengers Bangalore 3/1
The winner of this game can go into the third place. It is a small ground and a good batting wicket both line-ups are filled with some star-studded names expect some fireworks today. Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis walk into the middle and the Mumbai fielders too are in. We have blockbuster on our hands folks stay with us for all the live updates.
Mumbai Indians Subs: Ramandeep Singh , Tristan Stubbs, Vishnu Vinod, Sandeep Warrier, Raghav Goyal
Royal Challengers Bangalore Subs: Kedar Jadhav, Michael Bracewell, Suyash Prabhudessai, Karn Sharma, Shahbaz Ahmed
Has been a great time here. Have enjoyed the last three seasons here at RCB. It is close at the top. Being part of the group is fun. The rehab process is still going on. It will go on for two more months. It still hurts. Still a long way to go. Just taking the game on. We have been quite consistent as a batting group. Great to see Mahipal get the runs in the last game as well. Our lines and lengths were a little wide. Would be looking to bowl a little tight and straighter.
Rohit Sharma(c), Ishan Kishan(w), Cameron Green, Suryakumar Yadav, Tim David, Nehal Wadhera, Chris Jordan, Piyush Chawla, Akash Madhwal, Kumar Kartikeya, Jason Behrendorf
Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis(c), Anuj Rawat, Glenn Maxwell, Mahipal Lomror, Dinesh Karthik(w), Wanindu Hasaranga, Harshal Patel, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Mohammed Siraj, Josh Hazlewood
Generally you chase here because of the nature of this ground. Big score always creates the scoreboard pressure. They have a good batting line-up, hopefully we get wickets in their innings. There are a lot of teams in the race for that third and fourth spot, we need to play good cricket. One change for us, Vyshak comes in for Karn Sharma.
We are going to bowl first. It's been good for us, we have chased down targets here, it's a good pitch. Looks like a typical Mumbai pitch with even grass covering and also a few patches. Not sure how it's going to play, but we are hoping for the best. We understand the importance of this game, but what's in our control is in our control. We need to play good cricket, rest will take care of itself. Archer is out, we got Jordan, he will make his debut today.
Chris Jordan comes in for Jofra Archer for Mumbai Indians
Vyshak comes in for Karn Sharma for Royal Challengers Bangalore
Enjoying this year quite a bit, experiencing more of India. It's been great working with him (Pollard), just sitting next to him during the game, talking to him about the game and how he thinks, just what I've been trying to feed of. You just got to go in and express yourself, whatever the situation is, it's not an easy job, but you just got to try and contribute wherever you can. I think it's going to be a great game against RCB, hopefully we can play our best game. We haven't had a perfect game yet, hopefully we can have that, with bat and ball.
I think this (surface) will be an absolute beauty. There's a nice even covering of grass right through, on a red soil wicket, that keeps enough pace in it so it doesn't spin too much. I think it'll spin in the first half, there's just a touch of moisture on top. So it'll get better and better as the game goes on.
Unlike MI, RCB will have to play their next three games away, starting from Tuesday. The Faf du Plessis team has been on the road for past week. The only home game they have are against the defending champions, Gujarat Titans.
Mumbai will play RCB on Tuesday, followed by Gujarat Titans at home. Thereafter they will play one away game against Lucknow Super Giants and then will finish their league against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Mumbai.
Both teams have 50-50 win-loss records at home this season, with Mumbai winning two and losing two and RCB winning three and losing three.
Phil Salt’s assault helped laggard Delhi Capitals pull off an emphatic seven-wicket win over RCB; In a low-scoring tie in Lucknow, where the on-field spat between RCB batter Virat Kohli, LSG team mentor Gautam Gambhir and Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq was the talking point, Bangalore registered an 18-run win; The spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and Suyash Sharma shared five wickets between them to choke RCB’s chase as they fell short by 21 runs; Glenn Maxwell and Harshal Patel starred in RCB’s seven runs win over Rajasthan Royals; Mohammed Siraj’s four-wicket haul and fifties from Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis helped RCB to beat Punjab Kings by 24 runs.
Mumbai Indians were thrashed by Chennai Super Kings by six wickets; Mumbai Indians chased down 200 plus total against Punjab in Mohali; Cameron Green, Tim David and Suryakumar Yadav combined to pull off a heist against Rajasthan Royals. They chased down 212 three balls to spare and six wickets in the hut; defending Champions Gujarat Titans humbled five-time champions by 55 runs; Arshdeep Singh’s brilliance helped Punjab pip Mumbai by 13 runs.
Chris Jordan, who has joined the MI squad for the rest of the season, replacing Jofra Archer, is set to play. The 34-year-old pacer has joined the Mumbai team last week and is most likely match fit. On the other hand, Jofra Archer will return home to focus on his rehabilitation.
Tilak Varma had missed Mumbai’s fixture against Chennai Super Kings on Saturday with an injury. It remains to be seen if he has recovered sufficiently to play on against RCB. In his absence Tristan Stubbs will play.
RCB’s middle order is struggling and we have seen a lot of chopping and changes in the last few matches. At Wankhede, RCB might rope in all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed in place of Anju Rawat.
Matches played: 31
Matches won by Mumbai Indians: 17
Matches won by Royal Challengers Bangalore: 14
Teams chasing have won three of the four games so far at the venue this season. Expect another high-scoring match at the Wankhede.
