IND vs ENG highlights, 3rd Test Day 5: England beat India by 22 runs in Lord’s to take 2-1 lead

What today was and what was on the line, yesterday was a bit different as there was more cricket to be played, I pulled myself out there, to be honest I was cooked yesterday as well, but the game was on the line and nothing was stopping me. I am an allrounder, I get four opportunities to influence the game, one of the great things of being an all rounder is if one thing doesn't quite click then you have the other. I had bowled an important spell, I was pretty pumped up, very important position at extra cover, it was one of those things, I saw Rishabh stutter in my peripheral, natural instincts took over and it is a great feeling when you let go of the ball and know that is going towards the stumps. Big part of the game, Rishabh played really well, we all know how dangerous he can be and that wicket this morning was a big one and Jofra was the man to do it. It was always going to be the case, two very good teams going at it, we went toe to toe in this game, not going to lie but cannot wait to get on the bed for four days and then be ready to go to Manchester.

It was (extraordinary finish). It was actually part of the reason I went with Jof and myself this morning, one of those feelings, what is it 6 years now to the day (2019 WC win).. Jof played a major role in that, just had one of those feelings he would do something special and he cracked the game open with 2 wickets. It wasn't an easy call, there was a bit of discussion in the dressing room. Brydon (Carse) had an amazing spell last night, he was charging in and had great rhythm but it was a gut feeling, Jof's first match back in the Test team and sometimes your gut works. It is awesome to have him back. When he turns it on and the speeds come up on the screen, the feeling in the game changes. What an amazing job to get through the overs, first time out, tough week but he got some crucial wickets. I thought I had taken myself to some pretty dark places before.. but today bowling to win a Test match for your country.. If that doesn't get you going then I don't know what does. Bashir, broken hand, going out there and taking responsibility with the bat, then coming out and picking up the last wicket, absolute warrior to do that for the team. Extremely proud. Five days of hard-fought cricket and it comes down to the last session, last wicket and tremendously proud of the effort. I was pretty confident (about the chase). With plenty of batting left I was pretty confident, but the way England kept attacking, we wanted to have maybe a couple of 50-run partnerships in our top-order, we weren't able to do that and they played better than us. There is always hope. As long as there is a batsman batting there is always some hope, because the target wasn't massive and one fifty-sixty run partnership we knew we would be back in. He (Jadeja) is very experienced, and didn't want to give him any message. I think he was batting really well with the tail and I just wanted him and the tail-enders to bat as long as possible. At one point, we thought if we get a lead of 80-100 that might be crucial for us, because we knew the fifth day on this wicket might not be that easy to chase 150-200, so we were thinking if we can get a lead of 80 runs we would be in a good position. I think the last one hour, we could have applied ourselves a bit better, especially the last 2 wickets that fell. And even in this morning, the way they came out with the plans we were hoping for one 50-run partnership and if we had gotten one 50-run partnership in the top order, then things would have been easier for us. Sometimes, the series scorecard doesn't really reflect how well you have played. I think we played some really good cricket and I think it is going to be an even exciting series from hereon. It was Shoab Bashir's delivery which took a bit of a turn and Siraj tried to fend it; however, the ball rolled onto hit the leg-stump and it did just enough to dislodge the bails. Mohammed Siraj just sat there in agony. While England won the game but India did fight extremely well. A spare thought for Jajdeja, who has given everything in that chase. Could he have played quicker? That is a debate which can never be concluded, but it is one of the greatest innings he has played in Test colours, but it did come in a losing cause. Mohammed Siraj is getting peppered here with the short ball, and in the previous over he did get hit on the arm and the physio need to have and come a look at him. Whatever the case, India has shown tremendous fight in this innings. This game was done and dusted when Nitish edged one, but both Bumrah and Jadeja first and now Siraj and Jadeja are fighting out. It is not over yet, there is still long way to go in this game. As we update Shoaib Bashir has cleaned Mohammed Siraj the ball rolled onto stumps and that is the final wicket England has won by 22 runs.

It is Jofra Archer who has started here alongside Shoaib Bashir. While Archer is good but going with Bashir seems to be something which indicates Ben Stokes is looking for the new ball here. It is about eight overs away. If India can keep it stalemate till that point, anything can happen once the new ball is taken. The tensions continue to rise in all parts of the Lord's here. What a fabulous Test match this has turned out to be. To be fair, for the most of it it did feel like we had a draw on our cards, but the way the game quickened up last evening and today, well one must say pitch has been superb.

We are back for the one final time in this Test match. It might be over in 10 minutes or we might go on for another long session like the previous one. Whatever maybe the case we have a potentially one of the greatest Test sessions in history on cards.

Well, eight wickets down into the session now body would have given India a chance to survive it. But they did, and they still need 30 runs to win this Test match. What could have happened if the top order had performed is a discussion for a later day. But as of now, this game has shaped into one of the all-time great Test matches at the iconic Lord's. It is Jadeja, it is he the game relies on. This is not the final game of series but the tension is palpable Both sides want it, the crowd is getting anxious, there is a bit more of this humdinger left how much longer will it go we have to see do join us after Tea break.

We are 10 minutes away from Tea and Ravindra Jadeja with a slash outside the off-stump, which went for a boundary, and he got to his 50. There were no customary sword celebrations he does realise the job is not done yet. He has to do the majority of scoring. There might be questions of how he opted to approach this innings but he hung in there. He kept India in game. He is still keeping India in the game. Once that target if it comes down under 20 panic will start to set in England's camp as well. Off all the innings Jadeja has played this has to be right up there.

Of the final ball of Stokes, over Jadeja clipped one for a boundary which did come after a long time. What India needs is more of this, and it has to come from him. Yes, the ball is old and is quite hard to hit, and fielders are on the boundary and any misjudgment might be caught on boundary but that is the only way Jadeja has here. By trying to recreate another Bumrah like partnership Jadeja here is looking for an illusory hope. This game needs a move on. The longer Jadeja does nothing, the more and more the efforts of the previous partnership will start look tame.

Because India has lost nine wickets, the session is extended by 30 minutes. Jasprit Bumrah did an exceptional job of surviving for almost two hours, but just as the break got near, he did what he did. As we get into the final stages of this game, one would expect India to show some fight, but the way Jadeja is batting here, it does seem like it is going to be a replay of another Bumrah partnership. While one can understand the approach, although it is boring, Jadeja has to do something to put the pressure back on the bowlers here. At the moment, it is all too easy.

Well, Jasprit Bumrah has fallen here. It was the short ball that eventually did the trick. It was a short ball which he tried to pull just could not resist the temptation, and the ball went high in the air for Sam Cook to take. Well, that would be the most needless shot Bumrah would have played in his entire career. Siraj has walked in. It is still doable, but Jadeja needs to take the bowling on. If not the T20I mode, he needs to get into ODI mode. It is very hard to see Siraj survive more than 10 overs of this partnership. Runs need to start coming at a quicker pace now.

These both have added only 34 runs, but they have frustrated the English bowlers. They have given nothing away Jadeja, especially this could have been played in a completely different way, but he opted to go this way. We are still 20 overs away from the next new ball while we might not be able to get there but it is a possibility. We are also 20 minutes away from Tea if these two manage to bat till that point, regardless of the result, that is an effort which does deserve a lot of appreciation for their bravery. Both dressing rooms will start to feel a bit anxious now.

Shoaib Bashir has come into the bowl as well. He did have had an injury in the first innings, yet he is looking to contribute here in the middle for the team. There is a rough outside Jadeja's off-stump, which Sundar used beautifully yesterday, and Bashir has to do the same. On the other end, Stokes with his short ball tactic has spread the field with just one silly mid-on close to the bat, and to make things more interesting, Bumrah is not shying away to pull the ball. Having said that, another 30 minutes have gone by, Bumrah and Jadeja continue to frustrate England.

Ben Stokes has decided that is time to bang a few short here and he is doing it. Well, of all the situations, short ball tactic has been used in this series, this might be the time where it is justified, but the issue is the bowler who has opted to do it. Stokes has already bowled a lot of overs yesterday and today, and he himself is looking to bang it in short is a lot of load on his body. Nevertheless it is getting into a situation of at all costs now for England because although runs are not coming batting has become quite easy and Bumrah is dead batting it without any trouble because of the lack of moment.

Another over is ticked by here. And India continues to stick to their stubborn approach. Ravindra Jadeja, with his calmness is has just sucked out all the momentum England has had in this game, and now it is getting a bit anxious. A big over of 10-15 runs somewhere will cut England deeply at any point it might come. Those two wickets will just start to feel a lot more for England. They are still favourites no mistake, but the tide has slightly started to change and we can see there are a lot more discussions and field changes hoping to induce a mistake in the method then when the session started.

Well, that's a water break. Who would have thought that when Nitish fell before Lunch, this game would come this far? It did, and Jadeja once again against the grain has paced his innings in an opposite way of what everyone expects, but it worked in the past, and so far, so good here. England are going through their bowlers, and Joe Root has come into the attack. All of these are minor victories in the game for India. The longer this partnership goes on, the more frustrating it will get for England. And Stokes has shown he is quite a restless captain when it comes to creating wickets.

For Jadeja, alongside shepherding the chase, the other important thing is to pick his bowlers. As of now, he is looking to take his chance from time to time against Woakes, apart from that, he has been quite disciplined. And as we update, Stokes has come into the attack, so that is another spell seen through by these pairings. It might not show in the runs scored, but the balls consumed, the more these two keep batting, the frustration at some point will start to creep in, and England are a bowler short, and most of these bowlers have done a lot of work through the Test match it will start to show.

Well, there was drama in the previous over from Woakes, the ball hit Jadeja's pad and it was given out however, the left-hander went upstairs to find out the impact was outside. The following ball, Jadeja slapped one for six through the mid-wicket region. This is getting quite tense here. Brydon Carse has come into the attack, and Archer is taken off, so that is some sort of win to this pairing to see of that one threat, but there is still a long way to go. Jasprit Bumrah has not had a strike for a bit of time now, which is a good thing from Indian perspective.

Well, 30 minutes into the session, both batters are still in the middle. Fingers crossed it stays like this, if you are an Indian supporter however, scoring has gone down completely. The ball is not doing a lot of the wicket and the new ball is still a long way away. If both these batters keep batting, runs will come, but does Bumrah have the temperament and skill set to keep Archer and others away for that long? With about 70 to get, Jadeja has to get 50 of them hence it is understandable that he has put a price on his wicket, but he also needs to look to score from time to time.

Well, Bumrah has played a lot more shots since the start of play How many did he connect is a different discussion but it seems like he will go for it. Meanwhile, from Jadeja it is not as erratic as one would expect; he is still looking to respect the good ball and try and take on one odd delivery in the over. Well, one positive thing the ball is not doing as much, and India if they play it right might get there but it is a very hard game from here. A lot will depend on Jadeja and how he anchors this innings. He has spent enough time at the crease just to pull of that one 10-15 run over which might make England think a bit.

Well, it is a stalemate. Jadeja has to play shots if India has to win. The field is spread, and if mistimed, can be caught on the boundary. Jasprit Bumrah will get to face the last couple of balls or a single delivery it is going to be like this. The age-old tactics teams do. It is England's game from here on unless Jadeja decides to pull of something mircalous,, not for the lack of skill but he has not displayed anything like this at this level, which is batting with the tail to take the side home. It not just requires temperament but a bit of clever gamesmanship, which bowlers Jadeja wants Bumrah to face and which bowlers he himself will face and squeeze runs off.

There is no sugar coating it unless Jadeja plays here an innings of a life time there is only one winner in this game. There have been many decisive points in this game but Nitish's wicket just before Lunch might be that 2-1 moment.

Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara believes England hold the edge after picking big quick wickets and suggested the Shubman Gill-led India were a bit “negative” as they went about the chase.

“I think England will be more confident than India at the moment. The way I saw India bat, there were a few jitters. They seemed a bit negative,” said batting great Sangakkara to Sky Sports. 

“Washington Sundar told us they wanted to be one wicket down, but I think they should have given themselves a target of runs,” he added.

Washington Sundar’s character is like his skills. The man of subtle spin and useful cameos is the ultimate backroom boy, the foot-soldier who makes vital contributions but does not always win medals.

Successive coaches – Ravi Shastri, Rahul Dravid and now Gautam Gambhir – have preferred the player who can bat, bowl and do both holding his nerve in crisis situations. On the tricky Lord’s track, the England batsmen most likely to succeed were Joe Root, Jamie Smith and Ben Stokes. They had the technique and temperament to survive the lively pitch. Washington got the wickets of all three.

"We would have loved to have about nine wickets but it is what it is and we'll definitely win the game tomorrow," said Washington Sundar to BBC Sports. 

"We just need to see what requires in that particular situation and do as it is. There is not much in the wicket when you are looking solid and looking to play to the merit of the ball so we'll try and stay positive. We've got a long batting line-up as well, so it's going to help us in every way," he added. 

That was a poke which could have been left by Nitish; however, that's the game when you have someone who can bowl at fourth stump channel relentlessly. Bowling with a ball this old is not Woakes' forte, yet here we are, he did manage to pick a set batter. It is looking grim for India. They have taken lunch, and Jadeja will come out with a lower-order batter, and we might see some hasty fireworks. There was a definite nibble in the surface but it was not unplayable. It was exceptional bowling and superb precision bowling with some smart match up captaincy England have induced this collapse. We will be right back after the break do join us.

The problem for England starts now that the puff of dust is coming out of the surface, and they need a spinner in this innings. Without a spinning option, it might get a bit tricky. Having said that, England, with their initial breakthroughs, have been able to compensate for things at least for a while, but sooner or later, they will need Joe Root to come into the attack. As we update Woakes picks Nitish.

Brydon Carse has not bowled as well to left-handers as he did to right-handers last evening. However, Archer on the other hand has been the opposite a lot of it has to do with the way both players attack the off-stump of their respective styles of batters. When Archer picked up Pant earlier in the morning he was looking to hit the stumps continuously where as Carse when trying to bowl to Jadeja is unable to target the stumps and has been more on the fifth stump channel which is letting Jadeja leave the ball with ease however, if he gets a sustained run at Nitish we might see a different Carse.

Both Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Kumar Reddy have to bat through to lunch here. There has been quite a bit of damage that India has endured in this morning's session, with 90 runs It is not that it is undoable it is extremely hard. Both these players have to take this game a little deeper. It might not just have to be scoring runs, it can also be just blocking it out and making sure the ball gets older and older, and Stokes has to bring on his other bowlers into the attack. We are still unaware of Bashir and his bowling situation in this game and as per Woakes, making the ball do something which is this old is not his strength.

The role of Chris Woakes has been quite minimal in this Test match. He did have some bowling to do at Edgbaston but in Leeds even here he did look quite ineffective and does feel like England need to look at other options to replace his role especially the kind of wickets they are playing they need someone who can not just rely on looking for swing but also look to hit hard lengths and keep things tight when there is not much on offer. A 10-15 KPH quicker pace than Woakes does work but do they have that kind of bowler in their ranks we have to wait and see.

The ball is 30 overs old now, the swing and seam will not be as prominent as it has been before The longer this partnership goes on and the ball gets older, the easier it will get, but we have to wait and see both these two players have the temperament to deal with the situation right now. Both in the past have shown they can do remarkable things, but this is different. Fourth innings chases in Test matches require different skill set. Especially these small total chases, India time and again have found themselves in a pickle trying to get the runs in the past couple of years.

This has been England's hour. Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes have got it spot on. India was bamboozled by what hit them. To be fair, the ball did more yesterday morning than it is doing as of now. However, magnificent bowling with precision and pitching the slightest of nibbles in the air did the damage. England will believe they can win this game from here. As per India, there is no margin for error This is the final batting pair and if one of them falls the other one have to make the play with strike rate which always is a risky business but as of now things stand looks like England might take the lead.

Well, we did question why Carse was not in the attack, but Archer was. We have the answer now, that was a magnificent spell of bowling from Archer. He ran in quickly and made use of the slope nicely to the left-handers. He seems to have the tendency to bring the ball in with action and let the slope take away the ball and that is what got rid of both Rishabh Pant and Washington Sundar. Brydon Carse will soon follow Archer from that end, and Carse was quite threatening when the was nipping the ball back into the right hander he has not bowled to lot of lefties will be interesting to see how he will bowl to Jadeja.

Washington Sundar too has departed here. It was a fuller one from Jofra Archer, and Sunder tried to play a somewhat half-hearted shot, and the ball looped in the air, and Archer took a lovely catch diving to his left. India has lost seven now. India has not lost wickets in clusters since Headingley. Here we are when it mattered the most, the collapse issues have come to the forefront. While it is an inexperienced batting order, someone needs to understand in situations such as this the most important thing is to try and absorb the pressure for a while and get through the initial spells of the bowlers.

KL Rahul has fallen, now that is another cracking wicket for England under the circumstances. The ball went in with the angle, the natural delivery from Stokes and Rahul went back and tried to work it on the leg-side, and was not given out. Although it did look out umpire on the field did not give out. And Stokes sent it upstairs, and there were three reds. This is now falling apart for India. Washington Sundar is the new batter in. It is two left-handers in the middle for India. Usually, it is Nitish Kumar Reddy who walks in this position.

This has been fabulous bowling from England, more than anything. This should not have been as hard a chase as India has, made it to look. It could have been tricky, but India are in a situation where they can lose this game. It was a fabulous spell from Carse last evening, he was the one who started this all. There is an advantage in having players such as his while he might not be picking wickets everyday, but he hustles in and gives everything, and last evening it paid off. Also Indians in their batting approach did give a sense they just have to bat and they will win this game.

Rishabh Pant is looking to counter-attack here. He has an injury on his finger, but 15 minutes into the start of the play, he has already shown his cards and intentions. Once again, it does seem like a mistake from Stokes, the bowlers he opted to choose here. Carse should have picked one of the ends, as we update Archer has picked up Pant. It was a delivery which was going into Pant and nibble away at the last moment to rattle his off-stump, the left-hander was beaten all ends. India has lost half their side now and is in a lot of trouble. Ravindra Jadeja will be the next batter to come in.

Jofra Archer has taken the end. Brydon Carse was bowling well last evening, which is a bit of a surprise. Given how well Carse bowled last evening, it was an easier choice for Ben Stokes to start with Carse, but he decided to go with Jofra Archer here. Again, this is a call that can go either way, but given how well Carse bowled last evening, he does deserve a crack from this end before the ball gets older. On per other end, Ben Stokes is bowling from there. Whether he will continue or we will see Chris Woakes coming into attack is something interesting to be seen.

Well, another day where the sun is shining bright here at Lord's. It is going to be nervy chase from here on. How much will the pitch do we have to wait and see? The ball is 18 overs old It was doing quite a bit last evening. Will we see the same moment? Let's find out.

If India are to go past this total tomorrow, he needs to be there till the end — not just give India a good start,” Kumble said in his analysis on JioHotstar. “This is going to be a very important knock. If India have to cross the line, KL Rahul will have to play a major role.”

Former Indian spinner R Ashwin has called out Reiffel’s umpiring by pointing out some of the decisions that went against India.

“My experience with Paul Reiffel… I want to talk to him. I am not saying that I should tell him that give it out. It’s not like that. Whenever India bowls, he always feels it’s not out. Whenever India bats, he always feels it’s out. If it’s not against India but against all teams, then ICC has to see towards it,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel, Ash ki Baat.

During his days of struggle, father Sundar was helped by his aged neighbour, a sports enthusiast who had retired from the Army. He was PD Washington, who had taken a special liking to him while watching him play at the Marina ground. With Sundar coming from a humble background, Washington would help him by buying him cricket gear and even ensure he got a good education while growing up. In 1999, Washington passed away. A few months later, Sundar’s wife gave birth to a baby boy in a complicated delivery. And  Washington Sundar's father named him after his friend.

With first innings centurion KL Rahul unbeaten on 33 runs and Rishabh Pant set to come out bat next on Monday, former England captain Nasser Hussain has put his faith on “Mr Cool KL Rahul” and “Mr Chaos Rishabh Pant” to take India home.

“He has been there before. He has done it in Australia. He doesn’t bottle it. Rishabh Pant, he won’t be affected by pressure. He thrives on pressure. The two at the crease, we are presuming Rishabh Pant will come out tomorrow. Mr Cool KL Rahul, calm and calculated, who is getting runs for fun in this series and on this ground. Mr Chaos Rishabh Pant, but in that method that you know he knows exactly what he is doing. He handles pressure well. That’s the partnership you want to break,” Hussain told Sky Sports.

Former India coach and cricketer Anil Kumble has handpicked KL Rahul as the man who needs to guide India home.

“KL Rahul is going to be the main man (for India). If India are to go past this total tomorrow, he needs to be there till the end — not just give India a good start,” Kumble said in his analysis on JioHotstar. “This is going to be a very important knock. Hello and welcome to the live coverage of Day 5 of the third Anderson-Tendulkar Test between India and England, played in London's Lord's on Monday. India needs 135 more runs to win with six wickets in hand, as the fate of the Test is practically on the shoulders of KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. While India would fancy their chances with these two batters still unbeaten, England, on the other hand, are gunning for wickets. They looked menacing with the ball in the last 30 minutes on Day 4. The last day has everything to offer.
