India vs England Highlights, 1st Test Day 4: Tom Hartley snaps 7-fer on debut as ENG overcome IND by 28 runs, lead 1-0 in five-match series

"Since I’ve taken the captaincy on, where we are and who we’re playing against, it’s 100% our greatest victory," England captain Ben Stokes said after his side's 28-run win in Hyderabad.

Since having taken over as captain, with Brendon McCullum as head coach, in 2022, Stokes has led England to home series wins against New Zealand, South Africa, a one-off Test win against India, an Ashes comeback against Australia last summer, an away series win in Pakistan and now, a Test win in India. But what makes the win in Hyderabad so special? (Read here)

Ollie Pope: 100 percent (best knock). Coming here to India, toughest place for a batter, to start the series like this, heads and shoulders above the other four (hundreds). I got lucky there in the second innings. I played and missed a few. I was focused on covering the inside edge. I maintained that mindset and wanted to be positive with my sweep and reverse sweep. I have changed my technique slightly for this series. I have had a long time to prepare for this series. Made some adjustments, worked hard on my game. The family have had early starts throughout the game, they can finally get some sleep, will be nice catching up.

Rohit Sharma: Hard to pinpoint where it went wrong. Having got a lead of 190, we thought we were very much in the batting. Exceptional batting, one of the best I have seen in Indian conditions by an overseas batter, Ollie Pope played a brilliant knock . We bowled in the right areas. The bowlers executed the plans really well, you got to take your hat off to Pope and say well played. Overall, we failed as a team. We didn't bat well enough. I wanted them (Siraj and Bumrah) to take the game to the fifth day. The lower order fought really well there. You need to be brave enough, which I thought we weren't.

Ben Stokes: Since I have taken captaincy on, we have had a lot of fantastic moments. This victory is probably 100% our greatest triumph. It's my first time coming here and being a captain. I am a great observer of the game. I watched how Indian spinners operated, how Rohit set the field. Absolutely thrilled for everyone. Hartley to get nine wickets and Pope after his shoulder surgery. Tom came into the squad for the first time. A lot of confidence given. I was willing to give him longer spells. We completely back people who we have selected. The situation we found ourselves in, the shots he played, 190 on such a wicket, he was able to manipulate the field, that's the greatest innings ever played in subcontinent by an English batter.

Tom Hartley: It's unbelievable, will not sink in for a while to be honest. I don't think there was a lot of help, I had to keep a cool head. It was a tough one (on the first innings bowling effort), it didn't spin as much as I thought, and I had a chat with Stokes, McCullum and the team management. The dressing room has great vibes, it's a fantastic dressing room, one of the best. It's just the Stokes way, just bowl into the surface and we came out on top today. Getting a few runs always helps (on his second innings batting effort), it also helped me get to know about the pitch a lot more. Just unbelievable to be honest. I didn't have to bowl as fast as I thought (in the first innings), watching Ash and Jadeja, we knew we could take some time - change the length and the trajectory when we bowled for the second time.

Tom Hartley tosses one up at 81KPH and Mohammed Siraj, looking for glory, is stumped and England have won the Test match!

What a win for the visitors, their debutant finishing with a 7-fer. They came back into the game after two days of Indian dominance. Ollie Pope with the bat paved the way with an incredible 196. And then Hartley with a debut to remember. India have a lot of questions to ask of their batting department. Stat alert: This is the first time India have lost a Test after gaining a 100-run lead in the first innings. England take 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Siraj goes over the infield, this time finds solid contact and the ball bounces once on its way over the deep mid wicket fence. A big over this for the Indians - eight runs come off it - and the Hyderabad home crowd is right back into it. They believe. Can India muster up a win here, with just one wicket in hand. 199/9, 32 runs needed to win.

Mohammed Siraj, the last man in for India, tries to attack Ahmed but misses the line and the delivery brushes his pads on its way down to fine leg for four. Six runs come from the over. India, 188/9.

And India lose another!

Ravichandran Ashwin, looking for a boundary, advances down the track and misses the line of Hartley's delivery altogether and Ben Foakes does the rest behind the stumps. This has been a brilliant effort from the English and they are one wicket away from reaping the rewards of it. India, 177/9. 

Oh wow!

Tom Hartley with an absolute ripper to beat KS Bharat and clip the top of the off stump. That's a 5-fer for the England debutant and what a debut it's been for him. He'd gone for runs in the first innings, targetted from his very first over, but he's come back strong in the second. 

The agony on Bharat's face says it all. India are eight down and still need 55 runs to win. Two overs left in the day's play as Jasprit Bumrah arrives in the middle to join Ravichandran Ashwin.

Double bowling change introduced by Ben Stokes as Jack Leach and Joe Root replace Tom Hartley and Rehan Ahmed. But the Indians have decided to lurk for boundaries in the final minutes of play. Ashwin finds the gap with a slick cut shot square on the off side for four. Fifty partnership up between these two. After 61 overs, India are 173/7 and need 58 more runs to win. England need three wickets for the same, three overs left to play on Day 4. 

Right then, Srikar Bharat has taken it up a notch, bringing the attack to Rehan Ahmed. The leggie was dispatched for a couple of boundaries in his last over, latching onto deliveries that offered good bounce. In the next over though, the Indian keeper batter slogs a delivery in his slot. 150 up for India and just like that the deficit is down under 70. 161/7 after 59 overs. 

Rehan Ahmed was brought into attack and delivered a decent over. The ball is 55 overs old now and the pitch has gone very slow. We have reached that phase of the game where the surface is too slow and even the turning balls are going slowly letting the batters have enough time to adjust. Rehan Ahmed, because he is a leg-spinner, can get that extra bounce out of the surface; we have seen that in the last over from here. Ben Stokes has efficiently used his resources well in this game. 

Hartley has been brought back into the attack, and it looks like he will be bowling till the end of the day. Ashwin and Bharat are in no hurry whatsoever. It seems like they will see off the day's play and try to come tomorrow and see where things stand and how the pitch changes, but as of now, it has been England all over India. We have seen that Rehan Ahmed has been warming up, and we might see a spell from him. The challenge for him would be to keep the pressure built so far intact. 

One thing that has worked for Ben Stokes is his spinners bowling proper lengths this innings. He has identified the bowlers who will keep things tight and put fielders in areas were boundaries could be scored and dried them up completely. We could see in the first innings the likes of Jaiswal and Rahul played their shots. In this inning, India looked to be more in survival mode. Once again, the batters batting here now are getting stuck at one end for a long time, which gives the bowler the advantage as he can plan for him and set him up nicely. 

KS Bharat has been playing a few more shots since the water break, and that is a better way to go about things. Just blocking or waiting till the end of the day's play will not help India. They need to try and put some pressure back on the bowlers. As of now, the spinners are constantly bowling at one spot. Ashwin is usually very good against spin. He tends to play his shots but for some reason today he too has gone into his shell. India has dug themselves a hole which they are struggling to get out of. As we update Wood has been brought into the attack.

Ashwin and Bharat are looking to play proper cricket here. It is better to play a few more shots, given how the pitch is playing. We might also see Mark Wood being brought into the attack and trying to ball a few total deliveries. We still see Hartly constantly bowling from his end and all the bowling rotation happening from the other end—the fields here Stokes has set once again where no boundary scoring options exist. Stokes has struck the right balance between attacking and defensive fields throughout the day. 

Shreyas Iyer lunged forward at full stretch, trying to defend a Leach delivery, and got the outside edge to slip. With that, it feels like India is out of the game now. The blurred vision of Stokes of winning this game is getting more clearer. This Test will wake India up that this England team is not just a pushover. We might have a cracking series, especially given that India will probably lose this one. India looking back at the batting effort today would feel they could do better by rotating strikes more and taking more chances. 

Ravindra Jadeja has departed now. That was a brilliant piece of fielding from Stokes at mid-on. He threw the ball and hit the stumps halfway through when he was in the air, and the ball hit the stumps directly. A massive wicket for England. The pressure is building as each over is passing by. There is a pin-drop in the silence on the ground. Stokes can see it the vision might be blurry at the moment but he can see England going 1-0 up in this series right now. 

This is where India needs a batter like Rishabh Pant, who is an unorthodox player and hard to contain. He would not have let the spinners settle into a rhythm. Though Shreyas Iyer at the crease can do that he has been looking to play conventional cricket. Iyer is probably the best player of spin of the modern batters coming through. He is very handy with his foot movement and has excellent hand-eye coordination and we have seen the moment there is pressure applied England spinners do buckle down.

Both batters who have started after Tea have now departed. First, it was Axar, and now it is KL Rahul. Rahul trying to work Root on the leg side missed the ball entirely and was trapped in front of the wicket. He was given out on-field. However, he reviewed the decision, and the ball tracking had three reds. India might be better off attacking than defending and playing the regular game, as the wicket has been doing much more since Tea. Iyer is a naturally attacking player; hence, it might be good to start attacking the off-spinner Root. 

The ball has started to turn square and is keeping low as well. The pitch is getting worse, and India should try to get as many runs as possible in this session. With moisture in it tomorrow morning, things might be even more difficult. However, despite turning, it is slow turn; hence, the batters have time to adjust. The problem will come when an odd one bounces higher than anticipated. As of now, it is only keeping low. If both things happen, it becomes incredibly challenging to tackle.

Tom Hartley does it again. Axar plays one back but cannot keep it on the ground, and the ball goes straight to the bowler. Massive wicket for England immediately after the break. Iyer has walked into the middle, and once again, India has two right-handers at the crease, allowing England to use their left-arm spinners. However, since it is Iyer, we might see Wood for a burst, trying to ball short-pitch deliveries at the batter. India needs to build a partnership here. 

We are back for the final session of the day, and the game is nicely poised. It will be interesting to see how England will go about things. As per India, they will continue to keep batting the way they have been before the break.

Well, that's Tea break, and England is still ahead in this game. As per India,, this partnership between Rahul and Axar is building nicely. The tempo at which this game is going in the next session might be the final one, in all probability. England's bowlers, apart from Hartley, have not picked any wickets. Sooner or later, Stokes has to turn to Rehan Ahmed for a longer spell, Ahmed bowled one over in that session and bowled an expensive one. His spell might decide where this game will go. 

We see Mark Wood using slower ones this inning, which he did not do in the first innings. We have also seen Rehan Ahmed brought into the attack and bowl an expensive over. One thing that has been evident with England bowlers is that if they are hit for a boundary, they change the lengths quickly. 

KL Rahul finally ended the boundary drought when he played a couple of sweep shots against Hartley. As soon as he played them, Hartley pulled back his length significantly. It will be interesting to see when Stokes will turn to Rehan Ahmed. He is the only bowler who is not used it. Still, there are a lot of runs to play with for Stokes. Even though Rehan releases the pressure, there are enough runs to take the gamble. Meanwhile, Axar is batting like he always does. It seems like a move to counter the left-arm spinners operating and build a handy partnership here. 

Mark Wood has been brought into attack by Ben Stokes. Change in pace now. It will be interesting to if he can get any reverse swing now. The move might be to test Axar Patel's play against high-quality pace. We might see the Indian all-rounder softened up with a few bumpers with the field set here. Stokes also decided to change the end of Hartley, which is a bit strange given that he had bowled fabulously from one end. We are 20 minutes away from Tea, and so far, it has been England's session by a distance. 

The runs have dried up significantly in the last 15 minutes or so. The previous passage where runs came was when Rohit quickly played three sweeps. India should be careful of getting sucked into this and start blocking everything. The rotation of the strike needs to happen. Hartley was given a break as soon as a left-hander came, and Root was brought into the attack. One change evident from the first innings to has been the fields Stokes has used. He has dried up the boundaries completely.

Rohit Sharma departs. Hartley picks his third wicket. The Indian skipper was trapped in front of the wickets. He reviewed the decision, but it had all three reds on ball tracking. India is in a lot of trouble at the moment. Axar Patel has walked into the middle to deal with the left-arm spinners. We have seen India doing this in the past. It will be interesting to see what role Axar will play here. Will he play usually or start a counter-attack? Either way, India needs a partnership here. 

Since the water break, there has been a change in approach from Rohit. He was playing more cautiously before but now he is playing shots. Rohit does sweep but it is not a got to shot for him. However, the last three boundaries he scored were all sweep shots. Seems like the message has been clear to play a few more shots and not let the spinners settle in. Stokes would not be too unhappy with that as it does provide England with opportunities to take wickets as well. 

One thing India has on their side is the team does bat deep. But this is the crucial partnership right here. If England can break this, they will believe they can win game today. However, KL Rahul is a master of these situations where he tends to absorb the pressure and suck the life out of the momentum opposition had. As per England, Hartley is in the middle of a brilliant spell. All they need is someone who keeps things tight, and Stokes cleverly went for Leach, and he will do the job perfectly. 

Shubman Gill, too, fell in the same Hartley over where Jaiswal feel. The batter tried to play forward defense, and the ball took the outside edge and carried to Pope at short-leg, who was in a crouched position to take a brilliant low catch. This might be the last we have seen Gill for a while in the whites. England is ahead in this game at this point and it has happened for the first time since Stokes won the toss. There seems to be a sustained pressure that is building on the Indian batters continuously because of the field set from Stokes.

The challenge for England here is they have limited bowling options hence if the Indian batters start to take on one of the bowlers there is nowhere to hide for the visitors. As of now, Hartley is bowling well here, but India might be looking for that change of bowlers to come and attack them. Especially Rehan Ahmed who is a leg-spinner and he tends to ball a poor deliveries more often. As we update Hartley picks Jaiswal. The batter tries to come down the ground and the bowler balls it a bit flatter and the batter tries to work on the leg-side ends up giving a simple catch to short-leg fielder Pope.

One thing India needs to be wary of here is to not keep the bowler's ball to one batter. The rotation needs to happen constantly. When batters get stuck at ends, the bowlers have enough in this pitch to deliver an unplayable ball. Also, India is not looking to hit everything out of the ground at the moment. They have been very calculated in their approach so far. They want to take their chance but not hit everything out of the ground like they did in that first innings. 

England has burnt their first review. Hartley appealed for a ball that hit Jaiswal's pad but was not given out. However, was sent upstairs by Stokes, and the ball was seen missing the leg stump. They need to be more judicious does England using their reviews, especially today. With the pitch playing many more tricks and there being a proper total to defend, there might be calls that might change the game in crucial stages. It tends to happen quite often in these conditions. 

It will be interesting to see how Stokes will use Root today because he did a lot of bowling in the first innings and how much his body can hold up. He slipped in two full tosses against Rohit. He is not a regular bowler is Root. Leach seems to be unfit at the moment; hence, it might be a problem for Stokes if Root struggles with accuracy. We might see more or less the same of him bowling from Leach which is using him in small bursts. As we update, Hartley has been brought into the attack. He stitched a crucial partnership with Pope, which has prolonged India's lead more. 

Joe Root has taken the new ball as expected. Both teams must be wary that whatever happens on this pitch will only occur with the new ball. As the ball becomes older, there is not enough pace to create those opportunities on the pitch. Also, batters need to be wary that there will be few deliveries that will turn very sharply and an oddball that will keep low or bounce too much. But they have to keep it behind them and play each ball on its merit. That's the only way India can chase these runs. 

We are back, and the chase is on. We have seen Joe Root warming up, and we might see him open the bowling as well, with Jaiswal being a left-hander. Expect India to come all guns blazing as well. It is going to be a fascinating session. 

As stumps were called on Day 3 at Hyderabad, the groundstaff headed to the pitch with broomsticks to whip off the dust gathered on the rough patches. On the other side, India’s head coach Rahul Dravid, accompanied by batting coach Vikram Rathour, made a hurried walk, to get their eyes before the groundstaff did their part. For a few minutes the duo micro-observed the track, especially the rough patches and inspected the good length area before taking a slow walk back. (Read more)

The new ball was taken off Jasprit Bumrah’s hand after a two-over spell. With R Ashwin immediately finding turn, Rohit Sharma brought Axar Patel from the other end. Switching between mid-on or short fine-leg, Bumrah would use every opportunity, sometimes just five-ten seconds, to urgently shine the ball. When the ball was not in his hands, standing at fine-leg, he would point out the BCCI emblem on his t-shirt to whoever had the ball, signalling which side of the ball to shine. (Read more)

Bumrah picks the final wicket. Ollie Pope tries to play the lap shot, misses the ball, and gets bowled. He feels short of double ton by four runs; however, it has been a magnificent innings from the batter. He gave England a winning chance. We might be heading to early lunch here, and India will need 231 runs to win. Given the way Jaiswal and Rohit bat, India, too, might come all guns blazing, giving England bowlers a chance to pick wickets. It is going to be an action-packed session coming up 

Ashwin finally gets the breakthrough. It is Tom Hartley who he gets. The ball keeps a tad bit low, and the batter misses it, and the ball hits the stumps. Mark Wood has walked into the middle. If India can manage to pick one more wicket in the next 15 minutes, we might see 30 30-minute extension of play here. As we update, Ollie Pope tried to reverseweep the ball and missed it completely, and the ball hit the pads. However, India sent it upstairs only to find out that the impact was an umpire's call and the ball was missing. As we update Jadeja picks Wood

The lead has gone over 220 now. We will be going into day 5 of this game. It will be interesting to see what India does. England did what they did. The ball is in India's court on how they will go about things here. They can try to play for a draw and chase whatever England posts. The way things are looking at the moment, it feels like India might have to chase a record total to win this Test match, and given the pitch, it will be near impossible. 

The partnership continues to pile on misery on the Indians. Irrespective of who wins the game, this will put a scar on the Indian bowlers and create self-doubts about how to go about things. This is a tailor-made surface for the Indian spinner, and these are the pitches that have made India dominant over the years. However, here we are. Pope is playing career-defining innings here. He will be remembered for the rest of his career this knock. The momentum has completely gone away from India. 

Pope gave an opportunity, and KL Rahul spilled it. Another chance has gone down for Pope. It was a simple opportunity compared to Axar one last evening. The shoulders have dropped, and everyone is looking a bit dejected. The Indian fielders give the sense that they are waiting for things to happen rather than making things happen. The lead is gone now over 200. One more noticeable point is how little Rohit has used Siraj. 

We reached the first water break, and India could only pick up one wicket in the morning. We have another partnership building. If England can get to 200 it will get very tricky for India. Though the wicket is not doing much in the fourth innings, chases in the subcontinent can be tricky. Also,, one advantage India holds is though the wicket is turning, it is a slow turn. The batters have enough time to adjust even when beaten in the line or length. It will be fascinating to see how Stokes is going to use Wood as well after seeing how much Bumrah got.

The second new ball was taken from India, but the scoring rate has remained unchanged. Ollie Pope, once again, has been magnificent today. He kept his cool, did not do anything silly, and he is marching towards his double ton. This inning is not only a confidence booster for him but also gives the belief to the dressing room that runs can be scored against these bowlers on turning wickets, and the trick is to maintain the right balance between aggression and rotation strike.

Jasprit Bumrah is bowling a longer spell here, rightly so, as he is looking in good rhythm. With a left-hander in the middle, there might still be a time when the skipper might turn to Ashwin for his first spell. He had a semi-decent day yesterday. He would be hoping to have a much better day today. Unlike in the first innings, where Hartley looked to take the attack onto the opposition, this time he has been more circumspective and is looking to hang around with Pope here. 

As we were praising Rehan Ahmed, he flashed his bat at one outside the off-stump and the ball to the edge of the keeper. Huge wicket for India. It has been Bumrah who has been the pick of the bowler in this innings. Should Stokes have gone with another seamer, the way things have turned in this second innings is something to ponder upon. Hartley has walked into the middle. He played a few big shots in the first innings and made a valuable contribution, and India cannot afford that to happen. 

While trying to take a single, Olli Pope got into Bumrah, and both bowler and batter changed a few words. Meanwhile, skipper Rohit came in and cooled down the rising tempers. Rohit has chosen to avoid taking the new ball, which is hard to understand as this old ball offers nothing. Pope is batting like where he left off last evening. The more impressive part has been how good Rehan Ahmed has been. If there were any hope from India after Foakes' wicket the previous evening, India would run through the side the batter had ended them.

Jadeja has started the day with Bumrah. We are a couple of overs away from the new ball. Given that the surface has gone down significantly, India can make use of that. Also, there might be some moisture in the pitch, which will add to the challenges of batters. However, having said all that, the Pope was magnificent yesterday and has faced whatever has been thrown at him. India needs to pick a wicket here quickly and not let this partnership as the lead is already reaching that 150-mark.

Yeah, much more than in England (enjoy bowling in India). Little bit more to work with. (Bumrah's spell) Too good for me, I didn't last long enough to get through it. He's a quality bowler. When it starts to reverse, 4 or 5 overs of really tough batting, which if we can get through you can hopefully reap rewards, but unfortunately in my case, I couldn't. One of the most exciting things about yesterday was watching Ollie get through that, the way he managed that and obviously the rest of his innings as well. Some of the partnerships with few of the other guys means that we are well in the game now. Most of the guys play it (reverse sweep) a lot now anyway. Here, you got to find different ways of putting pressure back on the bowler, that's how we want to play, that's how we have played for a good while now as a team. That's a shot that can be very effective in this part of the world when the ball is turning. You try to exploit different parts of the field and make it hard for the bowlers to bowl the same ball time and time again. Yesterday, Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope in particular put on an exhibition and how to do that. Not with just one type of reverse sweep but four or five ways of playing that shot which opened up a massive part of the field. (Score that can put India under a lot of pressure) The most important thing is we try and take the scoreboard out of it like we did yesterday, went out there and we played in the manner that we wanted to play. If we keep focusing mainly on that rather than outcomes, we'll give ourselves a better chance of being in a strong position at the end of the innings. We have two talented guys at the crease now, we still have guys in the shed who are more than capable of some handy runs. I'm sure the pitch will deteriorate again as the day progresses. We gotta keep believing, keep fighting hard and play in the manner that suits us the best.

'There's more bounce at one end when compared to the other end. So, the batters need to be wary about going forward or playing back. The pitch hasn't changed a lot, the black soil has held the pitch firm and there are a lot of runs still on offer. England will think they have the spinners, Joe Root, in particular and they could do something special,' reckons Kevin Pietersen, who says it's advantage England. We were challenged, we knew how they were going to play, they're accessing different areas unlike the other teams when they come to the sub-continent. To be honest, we never thought that they would be rolled over like in the past, but we knew we would be challenged with our bowling. But we know we have the class and the experience in our bowling unit to come up trumps. 'You don't need to coach him' (on Bumrah), he's exceptionally skilled, always brings something different to the table. He' s always energetic, always ready to speak with the other bowlers, gives plenty of tips to Rohit, he just acts like a brother and looks to be on top of his game. If I look at the bowling perspective, all we need is to bowl 4 good balls, as soon as it comes, it's better for us. It's not the right thing to think about keeping the lead down to 140-150, the right thing is to hit the right areas, land a chunk of balls in a good area and get those 4 good balls as early as we can, that's what we're thinking right now.

We're happy, unbelievable knock by Ollie. Few more runs in the morning it could be a tricky chase. (Talk before the start of the innings) Bat like the first innings, the batters did that really well, very pleased. (On getting out to Ashwin twice) He bowled a nice ball today, he's allowed to do that. nothing changes for me. We can learn a lot from Ollie. It was something we have grown up with (playing sweeps and reverse-sweeps), it's a nice way to put them off their lengths. We would have taken this for sure, another 45-50 runs, it could be a tricky chase for them, (On Rehan Ahmed) He's an amazing talent, he's very confident as well, hopefully he can get some runs in the morning.

Last winter, when Australia toured India, KL Rahul was battling for a spot in the Test side. With a red-hot Shubman Gill waiting in the wings, mid-way through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India benched him for the final two Tests. He had gone more than a year without a century in Tests, struggling for runs across conditions.
